Commandos 2

Originally Commandos came out in 1998. At the time, the game didn't exactly have the backing of anyone. It sort of came out, somehow becoming quite successful all by its lonesome. Garnering quite a following, the only natural thing to do was to throw more money at the developers and pray that a follow-up would fare as well.

Commandos 2 is aimed at the same set of strategy gamers as the original. Not quite as slow moving as X-Com, Commandos 2 mixes squad based tactics with a great deal of strategy. You and your crack squad are placed in a World War II time frame, running all sorts of missions. Infiltrating Nazi bases, and rescuing hostages is only the beginning. This time around you are given three new types of characters. Joining the team are a thief, seductress and a Lassie-like dog.

Just like the original, Commandos 2 sports a level of difficulty not found in many games these days. There are going to be three different levels of game play, but that doesn't mean that the easiest setting is going to be a walk in the park. And just like last year, my futile attempts at learning how to play the game in five minutes were all in vain.

The game has moved on quite a bit from its beginnings. You can now use Panzers and other motorized vehicles. The graphics have also been given quite an update. Sporting a fully 3D engine and the ability to change the resolution, Commandos 2 seems to be quite a looker.

Last year we were expecting a late 2000 release. The way it seems to be going now, the game might come out in time for Christmas this year.
