The Year 2000
What a Year…
Well, 2000 was quite a year. Many people seem to believe that nothing interesting happened this year in PC gaming. Wanna bet? We're going to go over the top games this year in all the various genres.
Action: Console style shooters, 3rd person games, giant robot sims, and space fighters fit in here. If it has a lot of explosions but doesn't have a first person perspective, it's an action game. 2000 has brought us way more games, and more importantly - more varied games - to play this year.
Adventure: Alas, pickings have been slim. For lack of a better candidate last year, we put Nocturne into this category. This time however, we know who makes the cut, and the choice is pretty obvious.
First Person Shooter: First person shooters last year focused on online play. Quake III vs. Unreal Tournament. Who won? Counter-Strike! This year, however, the winners have given us the best in the singleplayer experience!
Role-Playing Games: The RPG comeback is a comeback no more. It's a full-fledged steamroller now, with BioWare and Interplay's Black Isle Studios being the tag team of steam and roller.
Simulation: What's that noise? Is it silence? Nah, you're mistaken, lad. That's just the sim category taking a deserved good rest after a strong performance at the beginning of this year. Things have been quiet on the latter half, however.
Sports: Oi! You caught us with our pants down, we only did one review of a sports game this year, but it was a good one and there are some honorable mentions to make!
Strategy: StarCraft is still king of online competition, but many, many other RTS games have delivered better singleplayer experiences and innovation is at an all-time high.
So here are the games, based on category then presented in alphabetical order...
