The days of old
Remember those great memories with Dune II? You had to know this genre was going places when that game came out. A few years later, it was the Warcraft twins depriving me of sleep. Just as I washed my hands of those two, a whole new batch wooed me in. Command & Conquer, Starcraft, ahh each have their place in the annals of gaming lore. It's funny how this genre brings in new addictions just as you're weaning yourself off of old ones.

With Ground Control one might say I was smitten from the start. That fateful day when I saw someone playing the demo… I knew I had to get a hold of this game, and fast. If only CalBear would let me do the review. After weeks of image quality testing with the GeForce 2 and Voodoo 5, a good old-fashioned game review was a nice change of pace

Out with the old...
It seems we have hit a major turning point for RTS gaming. Should we keep it on that familiar overhead view? The new generation of RTS games does away with the overhead view and in its place puts an interface that allows us to zoom in and see if Private Smith is really picking his butt, or zoom out to see him for the insignificant speck that he really is. The jump to 3-D is a hard one for RTS games. The developers need a reason for being able to move the camera around like that. Doing it for the graphical ooo's and ahh's isn't enough. One must give purpose to this tool.
That last game that attempted to make waves in this genre left a rather putrid taste in my mouth. It was foul, vile even. I couldn't wait till it was off my computer. Ground Control was none of these things. It was more than just a cheap one night stand for me.
