Graphics
Ingava was nice enough to pass on an early alpha of G-Sector to us for a preview. The game certainly shows some promise with its sharp looking Genesis 3D engine. Genesis 3D supports both Direct 3D and Glide. In our version I was able to play at 800x600. The main character, Cyra looks fairly detailed as do the environments and objects in the arena. Lighting effects enhanced the overall atmosphere as well. The framerate on G-Sector felt a bit choppy but this was probably due to missing animations, which will likely be added in later.

Slipping and Sliding
The alpha version we had was fairly raw, only allowing us to see two levels and one weapon, a one handed shotgun. Currently Ingava has finished two other weapons in addition to the default shotgun: a pulse rifle and an ion lance. G-Sector uses standard first person controls with WASD set to move forward, backward and strafe. Turning and aiming is done with the mouse. Since the game uses a 3rd person chase cam this might have made it difficult to aim your weapon. To combat this problem, Ingava made it so that your orange crosshair turns green as you cross your aim over an enemy. You're also given an audio cue when you hit one of your opponents, just like Quake 3 does.

Doing Tricks
The maps include plenty of ramps, half pipes and other places where you can gain speed and do tricks. G-Sector is a fast paced game - Cyra is pretty good at accelerating up to break neck speed in a hurry. Players will need to harness this speed but control her in the turns as well. Inertia is definitely an issue if you're trying to make a quick stop or a tight turn. As far as tricks go, usually Cyra will do a somersault, which seems to be a pretty good way to avoid enemy fire. The only bad thing is that it leaves you as a player a little bit disoriented as far as your position when the trick is over with. That makes you vulnerable to enemy fire as you get your bearings.

Summing it up
Overall G-Sector looks like a very promising game. If they can tweak the gameplay just right, and add a multiplayer element it would be a fairly entertaining 3D action title. While it still has some rough edges to smooth over, we're generally impressed with its graphics and potential; when you look at G-Sector, it definitely doesn't look like freeware.
