On the shores of Lake Michigan
The game does a great job of immersing you in the city. Whether it's the voiceovers of the race commentator in a heavy Chicagoland accent, the beautiful panoramic cityscape backdrops of the loading screens, the onscreen road atlas of downtown Chicago, or the beautifully modeled city that you race in, you'll have a real sense of being there.

Don't follow the rules
There are a variety of race types, but they all fall under the category of "illegal road racing". Sure, you can obey the posted speed limits and honor stop signs and traffic lights, but where's the fun in that? Imagine getting together with a bunch of your roughneck friends and their hopped up sports cars and deciding to race in the middle of the day on a crowded city street. Talk about an adrenaline rush. By the way, does anyone have a Ferrari I can borrow?

Nitpicking
However, one of my few disappointments with the game is that there is no career mode. One important innovation in the racing genre, most notably in the PSX game "Gran Turismo", is the ability to win races, get reward money, and upgrade your car. Racing in Midtown Madness is a blast, but there's no sense of continuity from race to race, just every man for himself each time.

That portion of the game actually didn't bother me that much. I'm not that big of a racing fan myself, but when I fire one up I usually just care about getting some instant action in anyway. Within the context of the game, there didn't seem to be a really sensible way of putting in a career mode anyway.
