The uh... story
We've been hearing about Serious Sam for quite a while now, from early press releases and screenshots, through the first technology test up to the second one. Many of us have played one or the other version, and most of us have heard of the Doom-style gameplay that throws bazillions of enemies at you. We assumed there was a story to this - you know, save the world and all that - but never really cared. After all, there was some story to Doom too - and how many of you remember that?

So, back to the story. In Serious Sam, humanity has discovered the ruins of an ancient civilization underneath the ruins of Egypt. The technology is reconstructed and catapults the human race through the galaxy, allowing an era of great prosperity as men colonize foreign worlds. Predictably enough, an extremely powerful force of aliens shows up on the scene to ruin things. Their endless numbers drive people back across the colonies, until a last, desperate battle on Earth. Seeing that the fight is hopeless, humanity's leaders send a single, lone hero (that would be you, Sam) into the past to do something to prevent this whole mess (sounds kinda like 7 Days -ed). Arriving thousands of years earlier in the Egyptian desert, you find yourself immediately beset by the same foes you were just fleeing. Now aside from the usual time paradox thing, and the illogic of aliens being on ancient Earth when they're not yet unleashed, the plot is pretty good, right?

Actually the whole game seems to have a hard time taking itself seriously. There is a fair bit of humor to be found in Sam, and the plot appears to be campy on purpose - like the Evil Dead movies. Sam has a few funny lines here and there. The game could be funnier, but it does enough as it stands.

The game
Serious Sam is all about 'big' - big levels, big guns, big enemies and big hordes of those same enemies waiting to open up one big Can O' Wup-Ass on you. If you've wanted to know what it would be like to be in a Mongolian clusterfuck with a minigun, and some badass aliens instead of Mongolians, then this is the game for you.
