More Star Trek Ds9: Dominion Wars resources

Gizmo's Gary Wagner and Simon & Schuster stopped by yesterday to show off the upcoming Dominion Wars, a real-time strategy game based in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine universe. Insert a witty, yet original joke about Star Trek games here. What separates Dominion Wars from other Star Trek titles? It focuses on taking the space battles seen in the TV series and importing them to your computer.

Stating the obvious

The story is, of course, centered on the Dominion War of the last two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The Dominion and Federation missions (10 each) bring to life some of the battles directly taken from the series, while other missions were mentioned in the dialogue.

The mission briefing fills you in on your objectives, from guarding a convoy to destroying a shipyard. After the briefing you choose your ships and outfit them with crew -- add more security for boarding raids, add engineering for faster repairs, or add bridge personnel if you plan on taking over ships and stations. Supplies can be changed to fit the mission -- more phaser rifles for your marines or more quantum torpedoes to increase your supply. There is no resource management in Dominion Wars; all of the missions are combat only. Your performance in a mission will determine the resources available in the next.

Make it so

Ships don't fly themselves; they always need someone in charge. In Dominion Wars the captains are officers ranking higher than a Lt. Commander. Each character has attributes that will affect the performance of the ship they lead. The better their rating, the better the ship will perform in combat. Characters from the show are available -- Sisko, Dax, Kira, and Worf are among the officers you can use, not to mention the Dominion and Cardassian bad boys. There are plenty of original characters as well that are just as good as the show's characters (don't worry, they're not of the away-team fodder type).
