FiringSquad: One of the chief complaints readers have with the new drivers is that they can't be disabled. Will there be an option to toggle them on and off in the future?
Most of our optimizations for Quake 3 and other applications have no impact at all on image quality, and therefore it would be pointless to allow users disable them. The current RADEON 8500 driver revision has an issue that prevents it from correctly interpreting the texture quality slider setting in Quake 3. This issue will be corrected in the next driver release.
Note that the texture quality setting is just one of many possible ways that users can increase image quality in Quake 3 at the expense of performance; forcing on anisotropic filtering or disabling texture compression are alternative methods. It is also important to note that the image quality obtained using all of the standard image settings in Quake 3 (fastest, fast, normal, and high quality) can be observed to be equal to or better than any competing product (try it!); it is only in the special case of selecting "high quality" AND turning the texture quality slider up to the highest setting that a potential discrepancy appears.
FiringSquad: What are ATI's opinions of these kinds of enhancements (reduced image quality, undisclosed changes) for benchmark-only applications (3D Graphics Winbench, 3DMark, etc.)?
Optimizing drivers for specific synthetic benchmarks is not generally helpful unless the optimizations can also be carried over to benefit other games and applications. The goal of synthetic benchmarks such as 3D Winbench and 3DMark is to attempt to estimate the performance and functionality of a graphics board in real-life applications, and distill those characteristics into a few simple numbers that, in theory, describe how "good" a product is relative to others. History has shown that, in general, performance in synthetic benchmarks is only loosely correlated with the quality of the experience a given product can provide in actual games. However, synthetic benchmarks can provide a good preview of graphical techniques that have not yet achieved widespread adoption in games, and give at least a rough approximation of how a given product might perform in future games that use those techniques. For example, improvements in how a driver processes pixel shaders might initially show up only in synthetic benchmarks, but will also show up later in real applications as more games that support them start to appear on the market.
FiringSquad: Are you aware of other video card manufacturers (NVIDIA) doing the same things with their cards?
Obviously we can't comment publicly on what we think our competitors are doing in their drivers… you'll have to talk to them about that.
FiringSquad: For many gamers, anti-aliasing is a very important feature. Can you give us an ETA on when SMOOTHVISION will be working in the 8500 drivers?
SMOOTHVISION will be enabled in our next driver release, which is slated to come out by mid November.
