Introduction

Napalm

Oh boy, here I am again. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, I accepted this Voodoo 5 5500 review from James. After three FSAA articles, you'd think I'd have washed my hands of the whole Voodoo affair by now. But it dawned upon us that we hadn't yet done a formal review of the card yet. So, without further ado I present the Voodoo5 5500.

In the current generation of video cards, the Voodoo5 showed up shall we say, fashionably late? Originally expected to compete with the likes of the GeForce 256, the Voodoo5 now faces two offerings from NVIDIA, the GeForce 256 and the GeForce 2 GTS. Even though 3dfx delayed the release of the Voodoo5, there is no doubt that the card is far more advanced than the Voodoo 3.

Oops..

Missing a full product cycle in any industry can be costly. The release delay will really force 3dfx to cinch its belt up a bit until the company is ready to unleash its next generation Rampage chip. Hopefully, the Voodoo 5 will get 3dfx back on track. NVIDIA needs some company up at the top.

The Voodoo5 5500 was supposed to reach store shelves with two other siblings, the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 6000. What's the difference, you ask? The Voodoo4 has one VSA-100 graphics processor, the Voodoo5 5500 has two VSA-100 graphics processors. If two wasn't enough for you, the Voodoo5 6000 will come with four VSA-100 processors.
