(rough)

So while I was shaving, I thought about something I normally would not have thought about.

"What would happen if I were to shave in a different direction. Instead of the usual downward motion, why not try up? Or even...sideways?"

But by the time I was going to put this plan into motion, I realized I was done and had about 3 cuts on my upper lip. I looked at my Razor and cried out "Why did you do that" but nothing replied, only a straight face. It has two lips and a tongue always sticking out at me. Always making fun of me. Some say these are "razors", but I know better. I know it's just watching and waiting for the next time to lash out and disfigure my face.

After I put that away, I would forget that I was not even looking into a mirror. I thought I was, but I then discovered that I was looking at a picture. It was a upside down photo of Roger Kynard. I always envied Roger. He was good in the group and I felt we had a bond. I forgot how this picture got upside down, but I knew he was gonna to miss me if I left it that way.

Upon entering my living room, I had forgot what day it was. I always keep my calender right above the space heater in the corner of the room, adjacent to my bed. But when I looked to see what day it was, I noticed that there was a red mark across todays date of March 3rd. I then noticed that there were no more numbers printed out in the squares and the year was not shown. Since I have nowhere to go, it makes the wait that much longer. Something special will happen on this date though, I know it.

After I decided to make look out the window. It was beautiful. The road below was surrounded by an insane ammount of flowers of all different sizes and colors which followed the road all the way to the ornate gate which kept people out. Every now and then though, a car would come by and bring some visitors for me. They were always greeted by nice men in white suits and they were always smiling and so caring. Sometimes we would have lunch together, or we would talk next to another window such as this one. It was very nice.

After, I noticed that I had a packed bag placed on my desk with my hat placed across the top of it. I was not sure what this was for, but they were covered in a thin later of dust. They must have been there for some time, but I cannot recall. It's not like I ever leave...

I think it's time for me to shave though, I feel like something special will happen to me today.

What is wrong...

If asked, I will explain more as to why I chose something so strange and short and not something based on computers and technology.

Ah -- I didn't notice the Roger Kynard reference. Nor did I realize until a quick google search that Roger Kynard is one-as-the-same as Roky Erickson -- who by the way, I think is just fantastic. I was really into his music a few months ago. I like that song, what is called, but the chorus is "I Have Always Been Here Before". And "Creature with the Atom Brain" and "Night of the Vampire" ...yeah his stuff rocks.

Yes you are correct. That's why he starts off shaving and ends shaving. He is in a continuous cycle of remembering and forgetting. He also suffers from schizophrenia.

I also made hints in it to show that he is also in a insane asylum.

The picture of Roger Kynard was a reference to the singer Roger Kynard (from the band The 13th Floor) who also suffered from schizophrenia (that's why I put in how he felt a bond) and the "He's Gonna Miss Me" is a reference from one of his songs You're Gonna Miss me. I just said it was upside down to point out that they both had a strange perspective on life.

It took me about 30 minutes to write up, and I wrote it to mostly make others enjoy a sort of abstract perspective.

By the way, previous comments not-withstanding, I enjoyed your story :) . By the title "Good Morning, Al Seimers" am I correct in presuming that you are referring to the character having Alzheimer's Disease?

Although I respect and agree with your statements, I think you are a little misguided in posting them here. Firing Squad is not looking solely for creative writers; with this contest, they are looking for a writer who has the skills and ability to develop what their particular audience wants: which is professional-grade, game-industry related content. There are many venues out in the great wide world for other varieties of creative writing. This contest also offers you a huge amount of freedom in your choice of article. Ultimately, however, for a writer, he (or she) has to deliver what his audience wants: be it a review of the latest Thom Yorke album, a magazine article about getting rid of PMS, a thriller novel about lesbians and lasers, or whatever it is he or she has created -- it has to be in the right place.

There are no limits on creativity in the world of writing. But if you want people to benefit or enjoy what you have written, then you must enter a sort of 'partnership with the reader', and deliver on some of their expectations, and follow certain rules, such as grammatical conventions.
