Whilst i know that this is not a game review as such it should be seen as an inspiration to future game developers.

Star Trek 40th-Annvrsy-Logo
Gene Roddenberry was born August 19, 1921 and died October 24, 1991 I believe that he was a great man with a wonderful vision of “Space the finial frontier”.
In the 60’s he had an idea for a TV Series called star trek, the pilot was first aired 1967 to the Paramount Movie studio executives at first it was rejected but with this vision he tried very hard to produce this TV series but he never gave up. There were many set backs such as having a black person and female at that as an officer, a Russian, an Asian pilot, an alien science officer, but despite all this he still kept going on and on until he finally got approval to produce the star trek series the original. In 1965 the show was cancelled and with that the studio was flooded with fan mail, phone calls asking that they produce a another series or to do a re-run of star trek, with that cry from the public the executives at Paramount had no choice but to re-air star trek.
Even though the special effects were basic compared to today they were great in it made you believe that you were traveling to distant stars and planets and meeting new species that would become apart of the united planet federation.
Perhaps this was the beginning of how people think about a game that is related to futurist ideas or something related to space travel. When NASA announced that they were going to build a Space Shuttle the fans of star trek insisted on naming it “Enterprise” and as a result NASA did just that.
As I watch the newer episodes of star trek – the new generation, Deep space 9, Star Trek Enterprise with the new special effects and the Computer Generated graphics it showed me that people like were strongly influenced by Gene vision and those that knew him personally know that this man was a great leader for the future.
As we start exploring our solar system going to the moon, then mars then to outer regions of our solar system were Science Fiction starts becoming Science Fact and we encounter new beings from different planets our planet earth becomes united and becomes a small dot on a space map amongst the billions of other stars out there in the universe.
So the next futuristic or space game that you play you must ask yourself is this what gene had in mind or was the designer a star trek fan or for the game designer/ developer would you base your game on something that you saw on star trek.
Not only games but to futuristic looking control panels and consoles with the LCARS style of interface as seen on Star Trek.
Gene Roddenberry was an inspiration to me perhaps he would be an inspiration to you.External Link: http://www.roddenberry.com/
