BioShock Review(Preliminary #2) (3 comments ) by: Hyper (3) | Posted in cluster AMD Contest Group Posted 6 months ago ( edited 6 months ago ) in category DEFAULT BioShock is a first-person shooter made by 2K Australia and 2K Boston, wich was released on August 21 (2007) for the PC and the Xbox 360 console.
The plot is set in 1960 and you take the role of Jack who just survived a misterious plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, after wich he discovers a hidden underwater city named Rapture where he has to defend himself against the creatures that lie within.I don't want to say any more details about the story so I won't ruin your pleasure of discovering all the twists and turns that will surrelly leave you with a "shock".
Such an immersive story deserves some great graphics: that's why BioShock uses the Unreal 3 engine wich delivers never before seen graphics in video games, but to crank up all the eye candy and resolution on the PC at a decent framerate you will need a pretty high-end gaming system!
The gameplay itself incorporates a few RPG elements and was also described by the developers as beeing a "spiritual successor" to their previous series, System Shock. Like any other first-person shooter it has an entire arsenal of weapons but what truly makes the gameplay shine are the plasmids, wich are enzymes that alter your genetic code, thus giving you superhuman-like powers like telekinesis, the ability to shoot with electricity and many others.
Now let's get to the not so great things(I really don't want to say anything about DRM) like the vitachambers. Vitachambers are the place where you are transported with some health after you die, wich in my opinion really take away from the survival theme because after you are transported, everything remains the same, even the health of the enemies, which means that you can go through the whole the game just with a wrench(except boss-fights beacuse if you die you have to restart the battle again)by respawning in the vitachambers again and again.
Like it or not, BioShock will remain a big name in the gaming industry and let's hope that it's sequel will be at least as ingenious as this one.
