 Retro-gaming ReDone: easy-money vs Reliving Classics (Add a comment ) by: LinxIB (8) | Posted in cluster Gamer Radio Subject: http://firingsquad.com/games/ Posted 46 months ago ( edited 46 months ago ) in category DEFAULT 1989- at 16 I was just a kid and worked my ass off to buy that awesome Amiga 500 I drooled over so much. One year later along came a game: 'The Secret of Monkey Island'.
Everyone who played it back then knows how amazingly addictive, funny & engaging it was. No other adventure, no other game alongside (the very different) Doom, gave me so many hours of ear-to-ear smiling pleasure.
It became a classic in its own right, a game that set the rules for others to follow, the game that made LucasArts stand up from the crowd. The sequels continued brimming with brilliance and irreverance to the joy of thousands of fans. Well, the 1997 one is kind of flawed, but only because the others were so damn brilliant and, let's face it, the move to 3D was an horrific one.
2009- almost twenty years later we have 'The Secret of Monkey Island SE'. Is it worth it?
I've yet to bring myself to install it. Will it taint my beloved memories of the original? From what I've read no. But..
At 35 I've owned some systems, since the ZX Spectrum (monochromatic/clashing colors, "Tape Loading Error" frustration but unforgettable experiences), the Commodore Amiga (maybe will get flamed for this but to me the BEST gaming experience of all times, hands down), the SuperNES (my only console to date), all the way to the PC. Since the days of my 16Mhz 386SX 512Mb HD, to the wattage-melting QuadCore, GTX280 with 4TB of space of today, we have come a looong way in terms of technology. Blitzing multi-core speeds, enormous quantity of RAM and hard-disk space not to mention dedicated graphics cards with speeds and memory that put to shame those found in stand-alone CPUs of a couple of years back.
Damn, we should be playing SGI-quality interactive movies by now at 60+fps!
But... aren't we?
Games with photo-realistic effects, HDR, PS4.0, post-processing, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, real-life physics etc etc Isn't this supposed to be the golden-age of gaming? All those NASA tech-jargon amounts to a gaming experience light-years ahead of the early-nineties?
Different I acknowledge, but better?... a resounding NO. Those younger than 30 might not agree of course, but those who lived in the days of Driller, Dizzy, Another World, Flashback, Head Over Heels, the aforementioned TSoMI, Stunt Car Racing, Target Renegade, Where Time Stood Still, Army Moves, Saboteur 1 & 2, and of course Doom will probably agree.
Which games do you remember more fondly from those days?
And of which ones would you like to see an 'updated', face-washed HD resolution, 128 sound-channels, real PhySyx version?
