| It's come a long way in the last month or so.
There's still a disjoint between the activities on the main page and those in the forums, though. If that were linked, it would help things a lot (and you'd get a lot more attention paid to the Matrix). I know that's a pretty major redesign on the back-end, but it removes the "two site" feel from FiringSquad and encourages some of the most active members (who are in the forum) to use the Matrix featureset.
The obvious need in the Matrix itself is inline graphics posting, rather than submitting media and linking it - more specifically, links are fine as long as they are done in the message body.
You can improve on the matrix by notifying when people are online or offline ("halo" on their avatar, etc) - which would then lend itself to chat rooms (IRC) within a FiringSquad context, further strengthening the sense of community (and increasing ad impressions).
Additionally, the notification system should be expanded to include when a friend (or otherwise) has replied to your comment. You know the comments you made already - notification when someone has done a "reply to" would be beneficial as well.
Finally... :) - On Slashdot, they have a "counter-friends" section called "foes". I'm not exactly suggesting this, but it may be an interesting way to expand the whole "friends" genre - you can have "teams" (where there's some arbitrary target - # of posts, most active cluster, whatever - that improves community as well), putting someone on a "foes" list could ignore their comments in a cluster (or specifically forbid that person from a cluster if you created it - etc.
I'm not at all sold on the negative part of the 'friends' bit I mentioned above - though you could potentially decrease the moderation of "oh yeah? You're fsking dumb, you n00b!" posts by ignoring those that do that.» Login to reply to this
