Round 3 Rules
Posted 75 months ago

You've all done a terrific job promoting yourselves in the Challenge Round, but now it's time to get serious. Following this round we will be chosing the top 2 finalists. Each will receive brand new computer equipment that they will need to assemble and test and provide full reviews and analysis of their hardware within the given time restraints of the contest. The equipment for the 2 finalists will include, cases, power supplies, motherboards, memory, cpu's, cpu coolers, and of course video cards. We'll provide the full specs of these systems soon.

We've seen exceptional writing from everyone, but for this season, the contestants with a strong technical ability are obviously at an advantage over those who are stonger game reviewers. That is going to continue into this round and into the finals.

For round 3 you must prepare an mblog that provides a performance analysis of either a CPU or a GPU. Your analysis must include an introduction, critical analysis, ballistics report and a verdict. As usual, use the multimedia features of the system to support your articles.

You are not required to buy anything new. Just use the hardware at your disposal. We're not looking for the person with the best hardware, but at who can provide a logical and narrative analysis that accurately describes the hardware under investigation.

As usual, email if you have any questions or need help. The judges are here at your disposal, so don't hesitate to reach out to them.

Dates:
Cluster freezes midnight Wednesday April 4th.
Voting ends midnight Monday April 9th.

We all, apparently, had to deal with down-voting. I went from 88.8 (highest rating) to 85.6 and 4th highest rating in just six votes. CanadaDave was in second with 88 when I last looked and he fell all the way to 86.7 and second. You should be happy though you finished with the highest rating and went from either 4th or 5th highest rating to the highest in roughly five hours.

Yeah it was nice when I was up at 92.5 -- but that was short lived. I don't remember any special highlight though.

I agree Darrellwu -- I trust the editors. I really pushed to get friends and family to vote for me this round though and started as soon as the article was published.

I don't think I got downvoted at all, but as I didn't really start plugging the link to friends until late my rating was also never especially high, so I suppose no one bothered to nerf my rating =P.

I think that in the end we'll just have to trust the editors to make sagacious decisions. In round two I was in the bottom half vote-wise but still finished second, so I'm trying not to stress too much about the voting process.

» Stats Update.
There have been 340 ratings this round so far (its 10:30pm pacific). As of yesterday at 12am 229 ratings had been entered. 111 ratings in less than 24 hours.

Compare this to all the articles in the challenge round combined to net 132 ratings during the entire challenge round. Thats an average of ~6 ratings per article. The submissions started showing up on the first day the cluster was open.

The article comments from 4/7 - 4/9 have grown by 23.

The average rating has gone up from 82% to 84%. The average number of ratings has gone from 18. 1, to 34.

8.6% separates the majority of the group. 18.6% separates the entire group.

I'll let the rest of you decode the data and develop your own conclusions.

As close as it is, it would be very presumptuous for me to try to predict. The contestants are significantly closer this round than Round 2. I also have no idea how much the challenge round has influenced this round. In the earlier rounds the current editors also gave an impression of what they thought of the articles, where as this round they simply gave an overview. I would possibly hazard a guess if I had their impressions. As it is, I reserve my prediction for myself.

After this thing is over you're more than welcome to solicit a copy of my spreadsheet.

I hope I manage to get a spot, I'd love to have the flexibility to look for new work/quit my job (see my challenge round article) and find something else. I feel I can put together a phenomenal submission on the build for next round. In the end its up to them. Let the chips fall where they may.

Sheesh. Buc and Dave have legions of zombie voters or something :p Still, I'm impressed with the number of votes I've been able to generate for my article. I hope other considerations will see me through to the final round.

I certainly hope my voters aren't zombies. This round is the first round I really pushed to have people come vote -- I normally don't like to push -- and I had my parents, brother, wife, in-laws, guildmates, and friends from various forums voting this round. I too am amazed at how many people were willing to register in order to vote.

Well, I was thinking of writing style, research, personality, etc. I guess I left the door open for bribery and blackmail, though. And sexual favors.

...turns his head and looks over his shoulder to see CanadaDave sprinting hard...

...hurriedly sends emails out to everyone he knows at work...

This thing is tight. WOW!

I am stuck at home sick and can't run around asking people to vote in person too.

Well only few (6.5) hours until the end of the voting. This is much more exciting than the round 2 vote and that was quite something. I just hope the FiringSquad staff won't torture us (you) by talking their time to vote. The articles have been up for 4 days or so, so they must have made up their mind by now.

/plug: I have just added hints to all question in this week game quiz./End plug

There is an error in the calendar. The voting runs through midnight tonight and the results will be posted tomorrow. We'll also post the results for the video contest at the same time.

Sorry about the confusion.
