I think that MS went out of their way to make Vista more Mac OS like and hide what's under the hood. I really miss the Hardware Profiles where I could choose which sets of services I wanted to turn off at boot. Now it's all or nothing.
I'm pretty sure that they don't want you messing around with disabling services no matter how much you don't need them.

My next build is probably going to be vista... from what I've seen it looks nice, but needs gobs and gobs of RAM to run well and fast. My friend built a 2k rig with 8GB of ram and he couldn't be happier.

I have 4gb of ram which has been more than enough... 8gb would likely be useful if you are running a lot of virtual machines, but for standard users would be overkill.

I will try to fill this area up with some suggested tweaks for Vista as I learn them.
