| I am going to post some trendings -- sorry this won't be regular -- a new baby prevents it...
6:30pm
Vandy 41(82.4) - 45(82.4) - 54(85.6)
Dave 54(86.3) - 55(86.2) - 66(86.8)
8:00pm
Vandy 42(80.7) - 46(80.9) - 55(84.2)
Dave 58(86.6) - 58(86) - 69(86.4)
I will update this the next time I take a reading. The 1 vote for Vandy was a 1 or maybe a 2 depending on the rounding of the previous vote total. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Jacob:
I am not implying anything, just looking at the data. The data from the previous round showed the same trend. You may not ask your "voters" to down vote, but it is fairly clear that they have. Its fairly clear that all contestants have been smacked by down-voting.
The spreadsheet that was kept for the previous round was fairly revealing.
Your ratings are now pretty low -- though your vote totals didn't change that much -- don't know if that is down-voting or vote switching.
I just wish the public voting had been handled differently as it seems to have served no positive purpose for the competition. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Wow... before sleep -- Canada is up by a good margin -- after sleep -- Jacobvandy is now up and Dave's ratings have fallen. Similar pattern to the last round too. Things that make you go hmmmm?!? Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Excellent work again on all three parts Dave. Your detail and ability to tie in the images with the text is once again fantastic. Your efforts are clearly superior to your opponent. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | With all the system swapping the article was a tad confusing and had to be read two times through to see what was being compared to what. If you had been able to put the graphs with the test that would have made it easier to follow, but you should have been mindful of the format you were using. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I am building a new machine that will likely be Windows Vista 64, Ubuntu 64 and potentially Windows XP (triple boot). I will have at least one server running W2K3 and another either running W2K3 as well or Ubuntu server.
I have not made up my mind yet which direction I will be going. Vista holds alot of promise but has thus far has not been what it needed to be. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Sound 16 -- Legend of the Five Rings
Sound 17 -- Tony Hawk (just guessing)
Sound 19 -- Legend of Zelda
I do not know the levels, etc... so... that is the best I can do. I have not touched a console in years. Flag this | Edit this post |

| IMHO being open source does not make software more or less secure.
What it what it does do is:
Close Source:
- software must be reversed engineered or probed for vulnerabilities
- response from "vendor" may be slow due to various factors
Open Source:
- the code is public so attackers can find flaws with no need to reverse engineer
- the code is often contributed to by the public and some projects do not have stringent review policies so malicious code could be "injected in to the product" and missed in the review process
- flaws can generally be fixed faster
- there is usually no attempt to dispute the flaws Flag this | Edit this post |

| » More thoughts on the public voting and the contest as a whole Dave:
I want to be clear on this again - I think the contest was over-all a very positive experience for the contestants and I hope it helped FS grow their readership. It is simply my feeling that the style of public voting left certain people with doubts and cause high emotions to surface.
I honestly expressed my emotions about how it felt to go to sleep in a first place tie with you to find myself (two 1 votes later) dropped to fourth in the morning. That HAS nothing to do with the FS staff.
The FS staff has been fantastic during this contest -- and with a high stakes contest -- that is a tall task.
I honestly do not think my article was 1st or 2nd place material (3rd maybe).
I think everyone had to work hard at their articles and in future events that will hold true as well. My only purpose in posting my "feelings" on the 3rd round was in hopes that it will help the FS staff to improve future events. I have suggestions that I am mulling that would hopefully elimintate the "doubt" and "burn" that several people felt. It would be my hope that we could remove or reduce the negative from the process and improve it.
I certainly hope that people didn't take my earlier posts as poor sport. They were certainly emotional since I was disapointed. My true intentions were to voice my feelings in the hope they would help improve the process.
I intend to work on and develop my mBlog despite the contest being over (just beware with a baby due on the 24th I may be distracted for a while). I value the relationships that I have established with some of the FS staff and other competitors and would not want to jeopordize them by being overly upset. When competitive people lose they get upset... I'm Irish too... When I get done being upset I get down to improving. I loved the feedback from the editors in the previous rounds because it let me improve.
I apologize if anyone took my previous comments in the tone of being a poor sport -- when I engage mouth in an emotional state I tend to not be the most clear and concise writer. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Thanks... Dave. I put alot of effort in to the article and really pushed to get people to the site to vote. I did not push people in the other rounds, but this one I did. Winning the computer would have made a tremendous impact on my life so I became invested in the process.
I was on the first page of a google search for NVIDIA 8800GTX and was a front page link from a Linux gaming site (http://gaming.gwos.org/news.php) so I should have been getting a lot of hits as well.
The toughest part was going to sleep Monday (I was sick so went to bed early) in the lead with you and waking up in fourth place. Finding out later that it was the last two votes I received that dropped me out of first place to fourth was even more crushing. With 60 votes I had a score of 88 even which means the last two votes I received were 1s. That really made me feel ripped off with the public part of this.
I want to make it clear that I do not feel that any contestant cheated nor do I think that the judging from the FS staff was unfair in anyway... I am just expressing the frustrations associated with the voting system that allowed for down-voting. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Your spreadsheet was even more informational. I still have a rather sour taste in my mouth with how things ended and the only thing that could clear it up would be to see the scores and how they were arrived at.
I want to be clear the sour taste has nothing to do with feeling that there was cheating on the part of any contestant nor do I feel the judging done by the FS staff was unfair. I am hopeful that the next season will feature a revised method for public involvement (voting) that eliminates or minimizes the down-voting phenomena that was noted through the entire competition thus far. That one, very minor, part was the cause for much discussion and detracted from an overall very positive enjoyable experience. Flag this | Edit this post |
