| Ah, but you were raised with different morals. The developers of the TF2 knockoff don't see it as theft and plagiarism. The concept of "intellectual property" is absent (or ignored) in China.
I'm not saying that's a good thing, there are obvious implications for international business. As far as the TF2 knockoff goes, if I was born in China I probably wouldn't see anything wrong with it. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You guys miss my point. If this game was released in North America, it would infringe on copyrights, be considered theft of intellectual property, and be laughed off store shelves. But it's not being released in North America. Everything from software to toys to brand name food products are reproduced in China at a fraction of the cost of the original. Ever drink Coca Cala? In China, the culture doesn't discourage it, the authorities can't regulate it, and the copycats make a quick buck to get their families out of 400 square foot apartments with rusty water pipes. The majority of the working class are far worse off than the North American working class. You want to compete against 4x the population, you cut corners.
All I'm saying is this game is not shameless in China. Our laws and ideals don't apply there. I don't think we have a right to judge how they make games within their borders. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Shameless? This thing was probably developed by a handful of people working out of a basement making less yuan per day than the average American kid's lunch money. If it plays anything like TF2, it will sell enough copies to people who never played the original before it gets pirated. By then it will catch someone's attention to advance the developers' careers in a country where it's far harder to amount to anything of significance than it is for us westerners. Shameless indeed! Hmph! Flag this | Edit this post |

| Shortly after launch (it might even be at launch) a pirate group will roll out a small title update that will completely remove the character limitations for offline mode.
I'll buy the game because I'm a fanboy and PC gamer. But I think Ono is a (insert expletive)-head for thinking DRM on PC will have any impact on sales across any platform.
Core fans will buy the game for MP and pirates will pirate no matter the DRM or platform. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The comments link on the Witcher article goes to the wrong page. Please fix.
On-topic: I'm 3/4 done myself. Overall, it's pretty darn good. But I think the combat system could use some refinement:
1) The auto-targeting system often has you switching targets, inadvertently throwing you out of position, or worse yet into a mob. Locking targets can help, but I'd much prefer a "target nearest" button.
2) If you get cornered or surrounded, you're dead. ALL your actions are interrupted by enemy attacks. I suppose you can say it's realistic, but realistically I'd jump over barrels rather than get stuck between them, and the cause of this scenario is usually because of issue #1.
Once you get the hang of it and slap on some decent equipment, it gets much easier, but the combat can tread a thin line between fun and frustrating. I don't like the QTE or vigor consumption on blocking either, but that's just preference. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The review pretty much sums up my thoughts except the 27 hours to finish. I'm at the end of Act 2 and I'm at 50 hours. Granted I like to stop and smell the roses, but that's still a huge difference. Maybe I just suck, I think it took me 20 mins to kill that blasted rock wraith.
I thought DAO was a tad overrated in our CRPG starved world, so really DA2 isn't far behind IMO. The only things that bother me are the recycled environments, enemy spawn spamming, and lack of equipment management. But I get the feeling some of those may not exist if EA left Bioware to their work.
The storyline up to Act 2 is a bit unfocused, but at the same time I think it's refreshing to have a "make money to get your family out of the gutter" story than another "raise and army and save the world" story. A thin line separates epic from cheesy. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Vanity. You hit the nail on the head there. I don't play casual games at all, but a few months ago my coworker showed me a Blackberry game and bragged about how good she was. Of course I had to try and beat her score. It was the same with Tetris back in the day, the game wasn't that fun on its own merit, yet it was crazy addictive because I was always trying to beat the scores my cousins and friends racked up. | | Actually I did spend a lot of time trying various AI combinations. Warriors with melee nearest target almost always just stood there after taking the first swing (but oddly ranged characters were fine). Any character set to heal at 50% health or less never triggered the healing process until they were a hit away from death, and needless to say they never finish the animation but consume the resource anyway. Maybe it was a bug. Regardless, if nothing else it sounds like you didn't have AI troubles. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | How responsive is the AI for your companions? In PC DA1 I found companion AI to be unresponsive (e.g. just standing there doing nothing) forcing me to constantly issue orders, which was tedious given that there are no rounds or turns. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Question: is stifling innovation necessarily a bad thing? There's a Call of Duty every year. Mass Effect sequels are becoming annual releases. Dead Space 2 wasn't technically different than Dead Space 1. And gamers line up in droves to buy them.
The majority of gamers (particularly those on consoles) are perfectly happy with games that don't innovate. And the industry is perfectly happy to stuff its wallet by refreshing a game rather than developing a whole new one from the ground up.
To answer my own question, I think it sucks to stifle innovation, but the masses don't seem to mind. The small percentage of people like me who find the repeated iterations of Call of Duty boring aren't worth the industry's time. In the end, keeping the masses happy is what counts.
I'm resigned to the fact that I'm a grumpy old PC gamer whom the industry has long since abandoned. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "Without any sort of anti-piracy measures built in, the game will be instantly available to share online via torrents, peer-to-peer networks, or direct-download file hosts."
I found this funny. With anti-piracy measures the game would still be instantly available for download. Are you listening Capcom?! *shakes fist*
I applaud CD Projekt for this decision. I'd buy it. Triss looked pretty hot in the trailer after all... Flag this | Edit this post |

| Halfway through this game, and yeah it's buggy. Which is not surprising given the combination of Bethesda's game engine + Obsidian. But I'm an RPG whore so I'll suck it up.
My biggest complaint with bugs is in combat. Some of the new character models don't have proper hit detection, and invisible walls that frequently block bullets. Maddening when they make combat harder, then punish you with buggy shooting. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I was disappointed with the first Dragon Age. In trying to make it "epic" they threw every fantasty convention at it, so the story came off as something written for pimply 13 year olds. IMO.
That said, I'm a sucker for RPG's so I'll end up getting this. Bought every other Bioware game besides the ME series. Stupid decade long Baldur's Gate hangover. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | If the game is even half as successful as WoW they'll recupe the $$ quickly. Time will tell if it's a bust. We don't need a disgruntled anonymous former employee to tell us that. I'm sure the guy feels all sorts of vindictive satisfaction sewing seeds of worry. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I haven't finished Mafia 2 yet so this comment may not be worth much, but I generally agree with the review. In fact, I have no desire to finish because I find it quite boring at this point.
I'm very much into CRPGs, so I have patience for story and character development, but my problem with both Mafia games is the sheer amount of mundane tasks. Wake up, get dressed, walk to the garage, drive somewhere, a few minutes of action and cutscenes, drive back. Then do it again.
A skip feature to get past the mundane would make this game much more accessible to a broader audience. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Depends when and what I'm playing. In December I probably spent 70-80 hours in one week playing Dragon Age while I was on vacation.
Most recently I spent about 32 hours playing Assassin's Creed 2 over 2-3 weeks. Now that it's over, I'll probably not game for awhile.
I can't imagine how anyone could spend 48 hours gaming every week. My eyes would explode. Flag this | Edit this post |

| That's exactly the point. Think of the target demographic for this movie. Big robots, explosions, and a crazy hot girl = $$$.
Besides that, characters in Michael Bay movies only need two expressions. Nobody watches his movies for the story and character development. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The MW series was my favorite series of games from MW1 to MW3 (expansion was so-so).
But I seem to remember being bitterly disappointed with MW4 because of the dumbed down gameplay. No torso turn, fixed equipment hardpoints, etc. Was MW4:Mercs the same? Flag this | Edit this post |
