music in Zelda poor? Matter of (poor in this case) opinion.

going through lines and lines of text is worse than listening through lines and line of voices? Yes, it would be nice to have voice acting, but the criticism sucks; it's faster to read than to listen... and certainly better than having poorly acted out voices (refer: FFX laughing scene).

The Wii is also not as immediately portable as you'd hope. Power brick, sensor bar make it more of a hassle than say... the PS3 to setup and packup. Not significantly so... but then again, the extra bulk of either PS3 or X360 don't exactly make them much harder to tote to a party and setup... they're still damn small relative to the PCs you guys review and tote around to lan parties.
So, another pointless and inaccurate comment.

I'm sure there's a bunch more, but after skimming the article, I don't exaclty want to go back and read it in detail.

>>>I use my PC for work, to find routes on maps, find movie showtimes, buy things, research stuff... the console is just for gaming.
---------------

Given your GX tag, this pretty much explains why the PS3 doom and gloom articles are so one sided and piss poor.

You use the internet to do all aforementioned things. The PS3, incidentally, will have an internet browser local to the XMB as well as whatever browser people decide to compile for the PS3 linux.

Of course, I'm not suggesting the PS3 will replace PCs; after all, there are plenty of specialised applications that only windows can run; but all the same, with an internet browser, keyboard/mouse, and even Linux, you can do quite a bit of work, if you really want to.

But then... you're not really paying thousands of dollars for a computer just so you can run productivity software... not when old computers, and computers priced in their hundreds are just as capable of doing so.

---------
Sony will have to break people of that mentality, it's possible, but they certainly will have their work cut out.
---------

Absolutely. Most people can't see past it's console heritage; they just can't grasp the PS3 as something other than a machine that just plays games. In that perspective, the PS3 is horribly overpriced. But some people don't want anything but a machine that can just play games; fair enough maybe, in which case, they'll either have to suck up the extra $100-200 difference, or just forgo the PS3... but the PC folk on this site; who when pushed into a corner like to spout rhetoric like "it does more than just games!", can be fairly called hypocrites, because it's what they are (well, it is, if they're bitching about the PS3's price). Yeah, they can deny the extra functionality, but they'd really just be lying to themselves; or in FS's case, lying to their readers.

As for me? I'm just an avid gamer; got a decent PC now, X360, DS, PSP, will be getting the Wii and PS3, and upgrading my comp a year or so after Vista is out in order to take advantage of more mature DX10 cards at that point. I wouldn't call myself impartial; but I'm definetly not biased to the point where I have blinders on and just hate on everything else because it's not 'my camp'.

I think you may find even the people who "only" spend $200 on a video card may be the same crowd that would spend $500 on a console.
------------------------------->>>>

Given that, this is indeed an enthusiast site, where I'm guessing most people do put their PCs together, or at least choose their components, and by extension, do spend the $200 on the Vid card, $200 on CPU, $100 on RAM, etc, etc...

I find this bitching pretty damn hypocritical. But then again, this is primarily a PC site, and PC biased gamers do like to bitch about consoles regardless.

FSGeek; can you link to where you heard about browser support for X360? I follow this kinda news pretty closely, and haven't heard anything like that yet. Also I'm aware that the X360 will release a camera (ala Eye toy); One would expect video and voice chat with that. But Media Center is required for streaming video playback. And transcoder (3rd party program) is required for streaming divx/xvid, etc playback. MS hasn't announced anything to the contrary otherwise.

It would seem more a case of you pulling crap from your butt and leaving a witless comment in order to make up for your own lies.

Even with all the extras for the X360; the X360 won't have a secondary OS (such as Linux) and it won't have (or rather doesn't) have a web browser. Also doesn't have voice and video chat functionality.

That said; you can get the X360 as a Media Center EXTENDER... extender, because you need a media center PC to actually get the video functionality working (and even then, you'd want a transcoder to get it working for most videos). Also, the X360 doesn't support USB mass storage devices directly (maybe streams picture/music media off it, but no game saves or the like)... unless it's been changed recently.

>>>I thought ps3's cell is clocked at 3.something not 4GHz...

3.2GHz

Opinion of the PS3 hasn't changed dramatically since E3, because I've kept myself abreast of the developments. 4 things suprised me at around E3 time; HDD inclusion. and higher than expected price announcement (I was $100-$200 off mark). 2 SKUs (not many saw this coming), and Linux on every PS3 (still something that's not been mentioned much if at all).

2 positives, 1 negative, and one neutral.

Since E3, I've seen website after website wax lyrical with minsinformation about the PS3's demise.

I do think it's a dramatic change in strategy from the PS1 and PS2; it's the realisation of their home entertainment computer ideal.

A lot of people won't like that; they simply want a machine that plays games. But at the same time, I think it takes a lot of balls to gamble that much; to evolve the idea of home entertainment that way. Even if it's not necessarily popular now (because people can't see past the price tag), I'm optimistic that the PS3 will eventually come across as more than a console; as a central hub of home entertainment.

The alternative is that the PS3 is simply another console in the vein of the X360; there won't be another device until the next next generation that would be able to claim that sort of title; other than a relatively expensive HTPC that's capable of competent gaming in addition to HD movies and whatever else.

$400 Premium Xbox 360 vs $500 Core PS3.

- DVD drive
- 20GB HDD
- Xbox Live Silver (no online gameplay; access to marketplace).
- 1 Wireless controller; 2 standard AA batteries to go with it.
- 1 Headset
- Component + composite out videocable.

IIRC, that's all I got with my Xbox 360.

The core PS3
- BD Drive
- 20 GB HDD
- Component output
- Wireless gamepad + USB cord (comes with internal batteries).
- Competent and nearly complete backwards compatibility.
- Access to Sony's open network (similar to Xbox Live Gold; except developers can charge for their non-MMO games if they so wish; if the PC open multiplayer model is anything to go by, most won't).

So for $100 extra, you get a slightly* more powerful console, a Bluray player and access to most multiplayer games for the life of the console. You'll also get a web browser and some other niceties if that's you thing. You lose out on the headset though.
*it's a fair assumption to say that the PS3 will be overall more powerful or more capable than the X360; slightly is just a cautious qualifier.

For the X360; you'll need to spend another $100-$300 to get the same deal; depending on whether you want the HD-DVD add on (only used for playing movies; and sits seperate to the X360) or want to pay for 4-5 years worth of Xbox Live Gold. Oh and of course, don't forget that play and charge kit that they nickle and dime you for. Backwards compatibility is also a crapshoot, and not something you could spend money to make better even if you wanted to.

Of course, you can't actually even upgrade the Xbox 360 to take advantage of HDMI either; but it does have VGA out capability.

But then, component is actually perfectly fine for most HDTVs, given that most HDTVs aren't 1080p, and closer in line to 720p (98%+ of HDTVs are 720p or thereabouts).
So if you're someone that can afford a 1080p HDTV (several thousand, and you really want it big enough to take advantage of the extra resolution), then the extra $100 asking price is hardly something to balk at. Unless, you just like balking.

Meanwhile, with USB storage support, one could easily use a USB flash stick if they wanted to port around their save files; cheap and versatile, it's far better than previous consoles propreitary memory cards... 8mb for $40; no media outlet ever seems to mention that traversty. A HDD standard means that you don't even need a memory card/stick/flash storage this time around.

In the end, $500-$600 for what you get is an excellent deal; But people are shallow, and media outlets are always after the sensationalist story; not letting good logic or facts get in the way of a good story.

The costs add up; building a PC to do comparable things would be far more expensive, yet no one would blink an eye. Getting the X360 to do comparable things is also more expensive (but again, cheaper than the PC alternative).

Whatever the case is... articles like this are just premature at this stage; it's obvious Sony have changed the direction of the Playstation with this iteration; whether or not they succeed is something that relies on the moves they make after launch; something we just can't tell at this stage. An article like this is only a glaring potrayal of the writer's bias and along with the PS3failure article, a poor overall showing of the integrity or objectivity of the site.
