| Too many great games this year, and from the demos neither of those two had enough to stand out from the crowd.
Compared to The Orange Box, Stalker, and Bioshock UT3 and Crysis just didn't seem worth the effort. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Engine very impressive: it looks awesome and I my graphics card is only very good, and not amazing.
However, gameplay feels a little cartony, lacking punch in some way. Couldn't really see myself choosing myself choosing to play this over TF2 or Quake 3 Flag this | Edit this post |

| Loving the new balance changes. The demoman needed some kind of nerf, and making his grenades only explode on impact before the first bounce is spot on. And the pyro change actually makes him fun to play, before this patch he was one of the two classes I never play (him and the engineer) and now I love him.
Really TF2 is an amazing achievement, 9 different classes, all play very differently and 8 of which I love playing. TF2 is practically 9 games in one! Good work valve. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I agree. I'd not really played the orgigional, but this is incredible. The classes are all very very different, and yet many of the classes are amazing fun.
Game feels very balanced, no one class domitates, and they all have their weeknesses.
I've only played for 3 hours or so, but it looks like it's shaping up to be the best team based FPS ever!
Now back for some gaming :D Flag this | Edit this post |

| I still cant believe in the states Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Director's Cut got an AO rating. It was just one sex scene, it was pretty mild (you see nothing other than breasts) and was not interactive (I was scared that it would be when I was playing the game and had heard of the banned sex).
That game was a 15 in the UK! What has the States got against sex? Flag this | Edit this post |

| wooow, slow down.
Banning one game does not mean they should ban all horror movies. From the looks of it Manhunt is extremly violent, and unlike the vast majority of horror films encourages the player to partake in ultra-violence with no alternatives givern. This is not about "has negative effects" but instead seems to be "has REALLY EXTREME negative effects".
Now I'm personally against all censorship, in every case. So of course am against this banning (and were it a PC game I would find my way to a copy just to I could make an educated judgement about the game). But claims they are being inconsistent in banning this and not "all horror movies" are just rubbish. You have never played this game, it could be far worse than almost any film/game released in the UK before. As Smooth pointed out, we haven't banned a game for the last 10 years.
Personal note, damn, I want to play this game now, if only to see what it takes for us to ban something! Flag this | Edit this post |

| » Ahh, good old Blizzard :) Just had a quick look at the html code behind the current blizzard.com page and spotted this little comment hidden away the code for the splash image:
/*.999...:1;*/
They have solved the age old battle.net forums war, 0.999... does indeed equal 1.
Hmmm, maybe that is the name for THEIR NEW GAME!
OMFG! I'm gonna pre-order /*.999...:1;*/ now! Flag this | Edit this post |

Will be interesting to see how DX10 performance compares with DX9. Also will give us a new angle when comparing the DX10 Nvidia vs ATI cards. Flag this | Edit this post |

| And I think I read that Alan Wake is going to need a quad core system to run at it's best.
Also, BioShock is going to be taking much advantage of Quad core processors.
It can't be that long (a year or two) when games start needing 8 cores to look their best. I bet HL2: Episode 3 will have some fancy stuff going on to take advantage of 8 cores, seeing as their multi-core upgrade to the source engine is built to pretty much take advantage of as many cores as you have. They just have to find something to use all that crazy power for :) Flag this | Edit this post |

| Isn't that an important part of what makes Valve's games so special though? I've bought everything Valve have made since HL 1, and although that's not a huge number or products, every single one of them has been amazing and fine tuned to perfection.
I'm glad not all developers work like this, but I wouldn't want Valve to do things any different.
When it's done, for the win :) Flag this | Edit this post |

| Wow, Beryl + Dual-head + ATI, now that's bound to be painful.
Beryl is still very early beta, it looks damn cool, but can be hard to set up, especially when mixing it with stuff like dual monitors.
Also, the ATI drivers are not up to standard yet. They can do all the basic stuff, but with fancy stuff like Beryl (or wine for that matter) it tends to take a little work to get them working. Just out of interest, did you use the proprietary fglrx drivers or the free-software/open-source radeon drives?
Your article is misleading, dual-monitors does not require rocket science. Dual-monitors PLUS very experimental early beta desktop effects (which are better than Vista's or Mac OSX's BTW) is not gonna be easy until Beryl and Compiz mature a bit. Expect that in October's release, which is likely to focus on Beryl and Compiz a lot more.
As for NTFS partitions, the reason is that everything to do with how NTFS works is kept secret by Microsoft, they make it painfully hard for anyone else to access them. Even reading NTFS drives from outside Windows was a massive feat of reverse engineering. Also, AFAIK, writing to NTFS now 99.9% works, but is disabled by default, since you don't want to run that risk.
And what were your problems with dual boot? I've never seen Ubuntu have any problems at all with dual booting with Windows.
By the way, just rated you a 1. Not because you slated Ubuntu (although that may have biased me a little), but because the article is of no use to anyone. All it says is that you tried linux and had troubles. You don't even highlight the fact that you were messing around with experimental software (there is a reason beryl is not gonna be installed in fiesty by default), rather than just normal Linux. | Yeah, the ET:QW multi-platform decision can't be because of piracy. There may well be hacked servers, but the vast majority of gamers probably haven't even heard of the term, let alone know how to use one, so the piracy that will result will be minimal.
The decision is probably simply to get their game out to a larger market. FPS games seem to be doing very well on consoles nowadays, so it makes a lot of sense. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You claim that if we had Star Trek book replication then very few people would write, and no one would write a good book. But that's absolutely rubbish! I'd argue that the vast majority of great artists are motivated far less by the financial success from making their work, but instead by the simple desire to make something great, and maybe also for the fame and respect it would get them. Think of the huge number of great artists and writers who sold very little during their lifetimes, and their work is seen as some of the greatest ever (for example: Kafka, Van Gogh, Nietzsche). As long as great artists can afford to support themselves and devote themselves to their work then they will create great things. And if piracy makes their work popular and well known then I bet they'd be over the moon. The only thing that reducing the huge amount of money going into entertainment would do would be to reduce the quantity of medicore work, produced by mediocre artists who are not really commited to their work.
Also I'd argue that if such great work is around then people who love it, and can afford it, will happily pay for it, regardless of how easy it is to get hold of for free, illegally.
But I agree with your final point, screen writers deserve to be much more well known, since they are such an essential part of a really great movie. Flag this | Edit this post |

| lol, Stallman to take over controll of MS, now that would rock! Not gonna happen though, Stallman isn't much of a GUI fan from what I hear :)
But "Another new feature AMD is adding is a Linux version of Catalyst Control Center." Thats good news, nice to see them starting to care more about us Linux users. All they need now is to release open source drivers like Intel do for their graphics chipsets, and I'll be very happy :D Flag this | Edit this post |

| Nope, the second did not suck. It is incredible, one of the most beautiful (visually) films I have ever seen, and its not just eye candy either, there is a lot going on beyond the visuals where it really matters. My favourite part of all the GITS so far, and I've seen it all (other than the new Stand Alone film, not seen that yet).
Highly recommended if you like films for aesthetic reasons or for the philosophical ideas they play with behind the scenes, much better than the first GITS film IMHO. Flag this | Edit this post |
