Only one of the shots looks better than the first two titles. I played both to no end and both were great. I can't wait to see how this title is seen. I remember back a year or so ago when Sony was touting this title as a PS3 exclusive. Not only is it not an exclusive, but the game is now going to look better on a PC. This is the way it should be - after all a PC costs a lot more than a console. That being said, I like watching Sony get stuffed with their own BS.
I don't care how many calculations those SPE's can churn out - this thing is going to look better on a DX10 machine than the PS3. Flag this | Edit this post |

I currently own a AMD64 3500+. It is a socket 939 and I am trying to maximize every ounce from my current motherboard. Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to this chip? Keep in mind that I could upgrade to this chip for the mere price of the processor versus buying an intel and probably getting a better chip, but also needing to buy a new mobo and probably new memory as well. The main thing that I am looking to do is faster mpeg processing. I use Adobe Premiere Elements 3, which utilizes multi-core processing. Flag this | Edit this post |

You are entitled to your opinions, but I have a very different impression of GoW. First of all, don't play ranked matches. Play on the player servers - they seem to be much more balanced and people aren't trying to kill you a certain way to gain an achievement (i.e. tagging deaths). As for the game, the single player was awesome, although it was admittedly too short. In my opinion, it is really unfair to lump GoW with other shooters. The pop and gun stype of play was very revolutionary and totally changed the nature of the game. Unlike Halo, where you simply run around killing people, most people that do so playing GoW will be shredded instantly. You have to gain cover and play with other teammates or you will die quick.
The multiplayer rocks, so much so that it is the most widely played game on XBL. Btw, if you don't like playing GoW online, what do you play online? Frogger?
Without sounding mean, it sounds like you all aren't very good at the game and get killed very quickly. I guess that would frustrate me too. Flag this | Edit this post |

I am not bitching about the new model for the reason most people will. Yes, I wish I had the new one rather than my premium unit. I am upset because I think this is a MS fumble. Sony is not looking real good right now and this is the time that MS should be cutting the price of 360 - not coming out with a more expensive unit. I am not saying that the Elite won't sell out - it will. But at the same time, releasing another sku will mean that some buyers will hold off.
If I was at the helm of MS, I would drop the Core to $249 and the Premium to $299 or $325. Before you say they can't do that, I saw a story a few weeks ago that claimed that MS was actually making money (about $75) on every premium 360). That would move a lot of units at a time when MS is on a high note and the 360 looks, well, like @%$@%#$@.
MS needs to use price as a weapon. Raising the price of the 360 and releasing it sometime in the future, are things that can only hurt the company.

At least this proves that MS has "SOLD" 6 million 360's. I always here the fanboys whining about how many consoles MS has actually sold, rather than shipped. This story, if nothing else, proves that MS has sold 6 million consoles. It is absurd to think that every 360 uses their machine online, although we have no idea how many do so. Wait until MS lowers the price of the 360. Sony will feel a tremendous amount of pressure to equal that price cut - a move that will further help MS and hurt Sony at the same time. I can't predict who will win this race, but I think only a fool would say that Sony isn't going to lose ground this time around. MS is clearly going to sell more 360's than it did Xbox's and the Wii, at least so far, has been cleaning up. I know that I am going to get trashed for saying this, but the Xbox was not intended to make money. Rather, it was intended to stop other companies from owning a part of the commercial real estate that is known as the console business. Remember, Sony sold the PS2 as a computer. MS didn't like that and worried about a future where people don't buy pc's any more, they buy emotion engines. By saying all of this I am not saying that MS doesn't want to make money. Of course they do - they are a biz with shareholders, after all. I am merely claiming that MS didn't want to see Sony take over the living room while MS stayed in the home office.
I believe that the Xbox will probably never make a profit. In fact, the moment that MS can make some money via console reduction costs, it will likely instead lower the price of the console yet again. This won't be done to make money, but rather, to gain market share. If you don't believe me, wait until they really start hyping Vista Premium and the xbox extender functionality.

I was watching a special on MSNBC about the history of videogames. Most of the special is about the old days of Atari, Nintendo and Sega. Towards the end, the piece starts talking about how smart Sony was in their marketing model for the original ps(1). The point here was that Sony delivered a great product and undercut the competition in terms of price. The commentator mentioned that Sony realized that you give away the razor to sell razor blades. The analogy, if you don't get it, is that you sell the console at a low price to ensure that the consumer buys lots of games that will only work on your system, therefore ensuring that you earn huge royalty payments for the console's lifecycle. I found this fascinating because if you buy into this theory, Sony has totally failed this time around. They have forgotten what got them to their huge position in the market. They are no longer giving away the razor - in fact, they have the most expensive razor on the market. I am not trying to flame - I think the 360 is too expensive too (although i did buy one). Let me say that the pics show an amazing device. That being said, am I the only one that thinks it is priced too high? The Treo sells a lot because business users want it. How many young adults, a huge portion of the market, are going to be able to buy a new, $500 phone? Ipods have been successful because they have generally met an under $300 price point. This is not a "my console is best" post. For all I know, the Wii might turn out to be a better console than the 360. I am simply saying that Gears is the best game out there. The single player mode is short, but the whole experience rocks everything out there. I have had every Nintendo console until this one, so I would love to see Zelda win. That being said, Gears is the best. It is a perfect combination of graphics, gameplay, anticipation, and fear. In addition to all of the above, the cover system is something new. This is a completely different type of shooter. I frequently find myself playing online in fear of what is going to happen when I break my cover.

Both the 360 and PS3 will likely be cheaper next Christmas. The 360's proceesor is going to shrink in size in the first quarter of 07. That change alone should make the unit cheaper to produce (more yeilds per waifer). I am sure that Sony will cut their console's price as well. I would bet that MS drops the core altogether and sells two premium models next Xmas: one for $250 (no game included) and another for the premium model with Halo 3 included. MSG4 looks good, but I really think that MS's upcoming games look better. I am really psyched about alot of the upcoming 360 shooters. The next gen started about a year ago, you remember the time, you guys were showed pre-rendered videos back then.
The PS3 is nice, but Gears of War kicks the you-know-what of any PS3 game out there. Sony fan boys want MGS4 and Lair. Call me crazy, but I will stick with MS's games for this gen. I am lookinig forward to Halo more than any PS3 game.

You claim that the PS3's processors might be twice as powerful as those in the 360. Where do you get this opinion from? This is pure speculation. Actually, the core processor in the PS3 and the 3 cores in the 360 run at 3.2Ghz. True, the PS3 has 7 smaller cores, but I believe they all run at the same speed. On the other hand, the 360 has multi-threaded cores, meaning that the system can run 6 threads at that speed. I think most people agree that the PS3 seems to be more powerful than the 360, but to say that it is twice as fast is somewhat misleading.
In fairness, I own a 360. I used to be a big Sony fan, but I can't stand the company any more. If MS hits their goals, they will have sold 10 million 360's within about a year of release. That is half of what the original Xbox did in 4 years. Sounds like progress to me. Flag this | Edit this post |

I have had WMP 11 Beta for weeks. I also have my 360 connected to my PC via the Media Connect software. Do I need WMP 11 to do streaming? Is that what Media Connect is for?
Also, I love my 360 but the WMV crap is BS. I have dozens of MPEG videos on my computer of my kids. I cannot look at any of them unless I take the time to convert them? That is BS. This is a way for MS to say that the MS can stream video to the 360, even though no one uses WMV. Now I am going to have to shell out an additional $60 to get Vista Home Premium. Does anyone know how many original Xboxes MS sold in the first year. It would be interesting to see if the 360 has outsold its cousin in a similar amount of time after launch. To me, the issue isn't how many consoles they ultimately sell, but whether they are able to strip some market share from Sony. I see big cuts in the price of the console in the next six months. Sony's online offering seems to be shaping up nicely. I own a 360 and I love XBL and XBLA. I wish the service was free like the alleged PS3 service, but the quality on XBL is really good. By that I mean that my $50 a year probably goes for the servers that feed my downloads so quickly. It will be interesting to see how good Sony's "free" offering is.
