| And if you really want a laugh, take a look at (my.bigpond dot com/internetplans/broadband/adsl/plansandoffers/default dot jsp) (sorry for the long link in which you'll need to edit to see it). Telstra is the largest telco company out here. It was originally government owned but has since been mostly privatized. That page lists their plans.
Obviously, they capitalize on the "non-technical" market based on their pathetic plans. Oh and they are one of the largest ISPs in the country. It is laughable. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I'm from the care-bear country (or the nanny-country as I like to call it) - Australia - and we don't have anywhere near 250Gb caps on our broadband plans. In fact, for say 100Gb (and after you reach that amount per month, your connection is slowed to just faster than dial-up) you pay around $129.99 AUS a month.
From other providers, you might be able to get as high as 140Gb for $129.95/month where 80Gb is in peak times and the remainder is for off-peak (generally midnight to midday).
My plan is 65Gb and I pay $69.95 AUS for it a month. 250Gb plans (coming from unlimited or whatever) may seem unreasonable however compared to other countries, I don't think you folks have much to bitch about. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Making someone pay 300 pounds to "not" go to court is akin to frightening people to pay a fee and signing an admission of guilt. However the problem lies in the fact that no one, not even the RIAA have any way of absolutely proving that someone actually downloaded copyrighted content. Sure, those that actually actively pirate games, music and movies SHOULD be prosecuted however there have been cases where people have the wrongfully accused of pirating. Essentially this is just extortion and nothing else.
The only thing this is going to affect is the reputation of these publishers/development houses and the reputation of the games industry itself. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I don't care what these companies earnings are. All I want is for AMD to stay alive and to keep competing with Intel to keep the prices down and competitive. No, I'm not an AMD fanboy but I like competition.
Go back to the early 90s and Intel's dominance. CPUs were cheap then weren't they? /sarcasm Flag this | Edit this post |

| The OFLC in this country is a joke. We can allow Bioshock through and other games that use "drugs" in them, however we have to ban Fallout 3.
The issue of an R18+ rating for games has come up time and time again in this country and at the moment, it is because of one ignorant Attorney-General (in South Australia) that is stopping laws being past to allow an R18+ rating for games.
Because of this, retailers will suffer in this country as people either import it or download it via a torrent.
That is correct: because of this stupid decision, the government is indirectly implicated in piracy or in the death of games retailers in this country. Flag this | Edit this post |

| I think we all have to fear EA. With the way they're going, there will be no innovation in the games industry at all. We'll be spoon-fed Sims and sports-titles each year and if there is any competition, they'll simply be acquired.
Yeah, that's what I want to happen to my favorite hobby. Some filty-rich company dictating shit for me to buy. No thanks. And no to this take-over as well. Flag this | Edit this post |

| On one hand, I think that this is great news as it will offset EA somewhat. However, the downside is that with these behemoths in the gaming market, who and what studio is going to be next? I think this could spell a time where minor studios are acquired and I don't think that will be good for the gaming industry as a whole.
I wonder how this acquisition is going to affect Blizzard's developments on its 3 upcoming titles (and the unknown 4th). Flag this | Edit this post |

| You should still feel ashamed as you are totally incorrect. Initially, when Vista was going through beta, and I believe shortly upon release, Microsoft made having GPU memory virtualisable (the main reason why DX10 was not able to be backported to WinXP) an OPTIONAL feature to allow nVidia to get off their asses and create drivers for Vista upon RTM - according to various articles out there, nVidia was having all sorts of problems getting this "feature" to work.
What this means is, because it is now OPTIONAL, DX10 can in fact be backported to Windows XP as the virtualisable GPU memory was one of the only things holding it back.
Now I'm sure Microsoft have a whole swag of reasons as to why it cannot be backported and I'm sure "forcing you to upgrade" will not be one of them.
As for Microsoft being "thrilled" with Windows gaming again, all I can say is - Go back to IE6 and the lapse of development on it, the total "We don't care attitude" of Microsoft when it came to security, but as soon as a competitor appeared, oh wow, we have IE7 and shortly, IE8. No, Microsoft Corp is there for the cut of the money and that's it. Fine, they are a corporation but believing their marketing BS leads you to be a fanboi. No thanks. Read between the lines. | This is essentially still an admission that people will refuse to upgrade to that piece of buggy, bloated shit, Vista.
It may even be an admission that Windows 7 is not going to be much different.
Still, I applaud Microsoft for making this decision. Security is paramount in their buggy, swiss cheese OS. Flag this | Edit this post |

| By all accounts, Mr Jordon once stated that if he was to pass away before finishing the 12th (and final) book (I believe this was around the time he was diagnosed with the illness that took his life), his wife Harriot would finish the series on his behalf.
His wife was his editor and she also edited other Tor-books as well. Let's hope that she can finish the series on his behalf.
My condolences to his family. This is sad, sad news. Flag this | Edit this post |

| You might see things slightly differently if you were in an opposing corporation at war with BoB. But whatever. Eve-Online IS a great game - nothing comes close to matching it in the genre it is in.
I still occassionally recommend it to friends that are looking for this type of genre. I don't hate Eve however I didn't feel it was worth my sub per month after what had happened. Flag this | Edit this post |

| And I wonder if there will soon be another story of the dev's being in bed with Band of Brothers?
Corruption in this game (not in-game corruption) stopped me from playing it. It's like if the dev's of WoW/EQ2/LOTR giving a guild the best items, without that guild having to do anything. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Fake Atari... Fake Atari. Infogrammes is the real name and as Yoshi said, they were doing badly before they bought the Atari name and of course, they'll continue to do badly.
I think their reputation is now established as a publisher that released buggy games and doesn't give the developer time nor money to release the much needed fixes. Many customers have been burnt by this company. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Quote: "He said that the update is similar to what Microsoft did with DX9. "We did make updates to [DX9] that extended the supported feature set. "All the hardware is still supported, all the games still run, all the features are still there, we've just simply extended the feature set and the lifetime of the API," he said."
Hmm. So the difference between DirectX 9.0 and 9.0c are? Let me think... Pixel Shader 2.0 for DX9.0 and Pixel Shader 3.0 for DX9.0c. In other words, NEW HARDWARE to take advantage of the new pixel shader version.
I don't believe the BS Microsoft says anyway so I call this bullshit until proven otherwise - i.e. DirectX 10.1 is released. Flag this | Edit this post |

| The problem is, if this story is to be believed, that with 10.1 it makes these options actually compulsary. This means that if there is a 10.2 or 11, it would seem that these same options will still be compulsary and they'll add extra bits on top of it.
In other words, the 8800's and 2900's are technically out of date and if you have bought one, down the track, you will need to upgrade again.
If this story can be believed. Flag this | Edit this post |
