| Alright then, I wanna start by apologizing for the "Sony paying you" comment, w00t. It was out of line, I have just been working very long days lately and it came out badly. I was commenting more on the way you made your statements, giving no back up explanation of your "facts" or stating opinion as fact. Hope you can forgive me. I hope now we can keep a civil debate without bursting into an immature battle as things so often do online.
Now on to the response.
>That one takes the cake. FYI *all* upscalers >are software ones. High-end DVD upscalers are >nothing more than CPU+DSP, and the Cell is a >CPU with 7 beefed up DSPs.
>We're talking digital here, everything is >software, the so-called hardware deinterlacers >are nothing more than specialty chips that >package a CPU, DSP and some software. In the >end they're just doing maths, and which maths >they're doing is dictated by software (even >DSPs are controled by software, if they weren't >they wouldn't be patchable)
Glad you know your stuff, but you cant stand here and tell me all upscalers are the same. Yes both "hardware" and "software" upscalers are based on algorithms. The cell processor is an interesting beast, but no matter what kind of beast it is, the point is moot. That because the PS3 uses the GPU to upscale. This creates less of a problem for DVDs than any upscaling of games as the load on the GPU will affect its ability to run those algorithms. Then again the quality of the upscaler is also based on those algorithms.
>HTPC interface is based on PC browsers, which >results in a clunky (small controls small >buttons, popups, etc.) unless your living room >couch looks like a desktop (mine doesn't).
Hm...my living room couch isn't like a desktop either. There are plenty of fixes for all the problems you have with it. Since I have a dedicate HTPC, I can easily tweak settings to make all buttons/controls/text readable. Heck without tweaking anything I can read/see perfectly fine. And just to show you my living room isn't a desktop, I've got a 50" 1080p TV and its across the room from my couch, probably about 15 feet or more.
>Let's repeat it again so it sinks in: hardware >upscalers are just a CPU, DSP, and sofwtare in >a single package.
>They can be firmware upgraded and fixed... and >what is a new firmware if not a new version of >the software? see the light now?
Once again, the hardware upscaler is dedicated to its job, and any sort of load on the GPU will affect the PS3 upscaling. Also once again, upscalers are based on algorithms, which is why updates happen. I personally don't think the algorithms the PS3 is using is doing a comparative job to "high-quality DVD upscaler" like you do.
>Ah, good of you to admit it. :)
>But how many you're seeing merely depends on >how strong (or weak) your consumer kung-fu is.
Hmmm... wow we agree! There are sub-$400 blu-ray players. Too bad that wasn't my point. My point was that HD-DVD has player at a much cheaper price and are more easily available. It doesn't matter how strong or weak my "consumer kung-fu is."
>Nope, read reviews.
I have read plenty of reviews. I have seen mixed reactions, some people love it, some don't. But reviews are opinions. Therefore I have my own. I have seen both upscaled DVDs on a PS3 and "high-quality DVD upscaler[s]". Most comparatively an OPPO 981. I have seen for myself that the OPPO does a much better job (in my opinion) on all DVDs. The line grows thinner on animated films, but the difference is more noticeable otherwise. Either way arguing opinions is going to go no where, so we can agree to disagree or continue to debate it. You're choice =)
Anyway, I don't feel much publicly slapped. Actually more misunderstood, as this is obviously a topic that needs more discussion than posting comments to truly discuss (otherwise we end up with long comments no one reads but us =) ). Its late and I need to be at work in a few hours for another long day. I apologize again if I insulted you, and apologize if anything said here does insult you. I always mean comments with the most respect. I also apologize for any grammatical/spelling/etc errors. I am wiped right now. Hope it all made sense too, but thinking straight isnt my best ability right now either. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | HD-DVD zealot? You know what they say about assumptions. They make an...never mind. Funny I only mention HD-DVD twice. Once I say they are winning due to much lower player prices. The next time I say they lose because they're drives are virtually non existent. If I happen to be wrong in either point, please feel free to correct me. I will be the first to admit I'm wrong, but I don't feel any of my points were unfounded. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Wow, how much is Sony paying you to promote them? Sure, the ps3 has a Blu-Ray player built in, but "high-quality DVD upscaler"? Are you kidding me? Just the fact that its a software upscaler should be enough for it not to be considered "high quality." Decent web browser? Thats really up to opinion, but compare it to browsing the web on an HTPC and the best I see is it being the same experience (if yours using keyboard and mouse on the ps3 instead of the controller). Destroys HTPCs? For media it doesn't even come close. For games it comes down what hardware you have in your HTPC and what games you prefer. But in a year or less even an HTPC with "budget" hardware will outshine a ps3 graphically. Besides any DVD player, receiver, etc with a true hardware upscaler will beat a ps3 hands down. Also I'd like to mention that I'm hard pressed to find blu-ray players sub-$400 that aren't on sale. I have seen a few, but since I've seen way more HD-DVD players sub $200, I think Blu-Ray loses. I will hand it to Blu-Ray though, they are on top of releasing drives for the computer. HD-DVD drives are few and far between. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Since I know everyone is interested in performance references, I'll post mine.
System:
C2D E6600
8800 GTX 768MB
2GB Corsair Dominator PC6400
2X500GB Seagate Barracuda in RAID 0 (backed up of course)
Creative SB X-fi Xtreme Music
I'm running everything at stock on Windows XP SP2 with the 163.71 drivers. My settings were at 1680X1050 with everything on high and no AA. FPS averaged around 15, dipping as low as 8 and high as 22. I might try overclocking and will report back if I do. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Ok, I have to comment on this since it's said every time something about DoW is mentioned. Relic came out and stated a looooooooooong time ago that the current engine DoW is running cannot support Tyranids properly. I know there was (still is?) a nid mod, but the devs came out and stated it wont be done. I realize Iron Lore is now working on it, but I'd think them not including nids now is a sign that they wont be trying it either. Even if they did, I believe Relic knows what they are doing and if they say it cant be done properly then I don't want to see Iron Lore try. If you want them that bad, go support the mod or mod it yourself. Or wait for DoW2. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Actually, they did mention the release "date".
"UbiSoft has officially announced an official release date of November for Assassin's Creed"
Ubisoft only announced that its coming in November, no actual date in November has been set as far as I know. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I live in Long Beach and can find PS3s everywhere. I've actually seen more people return PS3s than buy them, though I haven't seen much of either. My friend who works at Costco said they got about 10 of them two weeks before christmas and still have yet to sell them all. He said most people complain that it just costs too much. Is the O.C., Long Beach and L.A. populated enough for you? Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Actually, each virtual console game lists what controller you can use to play it. Some can use the wiimote, the GC controller and the classic controller, while others can use only the classic controller. It is guaranteed that every virtual console game can use the classic controller though, while the same cannot be said of the GC controller or wiimote. Flag this | Edit this post |

| "Once the console is first turned on the Wii stays on in standby mode; there is no way to completely turn the console off short of pulling the console’s power cord off."
Am I mistaken or can't you turn the console completely off by holding the power button on the wii console itself(ie. PS2)? Atleast my console turns all the way off and as far as I know a green light means on, yellow means standby with wiiconnect24 and red means off. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I have to agree 100% here. I think this entire article is biased on the common "Nintendo is a 'kiddie' company" claim. Besides I don't believe the wiimote and the way the console plays can be commented on with just one or even two games, especially just wii sports which while very fun is still just a tech demo people liked so much they packaged it in with the system. Also, I don't know about anyone else, but on Sunday night around 10 PM the updates for the system took me about 10-20 minutes for both, including setting up the wireless connection, which I have had little problems with so far. While I don't know JCal's true biases against Nintendo, the entire article gave me a feel that he, being a "hardcore" gamer, had many of the biases of "hardcore" gamers and seemed to be very closed minded when it came to the console. He seemed to look for and point out anything he could find wrong with the console, no matter how little or how opinionated it was. But then again maybe these are just oversensitive comments because I'm a "Nintendo Fanboy" Flag this | Edit this post |
