| Yeah, you're clueless. Selling only a million copies is crap because it barely covers the cost of producing a current gen game. Most AAA games cost $50 million or more to produce. The next gen will cost even more. Selling a million is barely breaking even. Both developers and publishers need profit. Making only $25 million in profit after spending $50 million to make a game is horrible, now you only have $25 million to make the next game. This is basic grade school math.
Modding is dying off, everyone with real experience is in agreement on this. I don't care if you made some silly Halo mod for UT that no one played. You don't know what you're talking about.
Nvidia's next top card, the 9800GX2, will cost $500 so things are still expensive. The only reason things are cheaper now is because the technology has leveled off and the cost of production is less. Once the next generation of technology takes off, prices will sky rocket again. This has happened over and over again for the past 20 years.

| Ummm....if you actually knew what kind of workforce is needed just to create a simple map or mod for this current generation of games you would know the whole PC mod community is on it's deathbed. The next gen will be next to impossible to develop for as a hobby if you want your mod to release before the game's popularity is gone.
PCs used to be a tool for people to use and try to make a profession out of their game hobby, it's how the game industry started. Now PCs only get games for nostalgia, there's really no money in it for game developers. Just look at Gears of War, one of the all time best selling 360 games, the PC version sold like crap. It even had exclusive content for the PC version. Developers aren't making more console games just for the fun of it. Numbers don't lie. Last year's most technologically advanced PC game, Crysis, sold like crap compared to console games. The PC version of Call of Duty 4 sales numbers are crap compared to the console versions. It's not that PC's aren't more advanced, they're just a pain in the ass to use for the average consumer. Why worry if your $600 video card's drivers will run a game correctly if you can just go out and buy a $400 Xbox 360 and not worry about it?
The next gen consoles will basically be gaming PCs anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if keyboards are standard because web surfing will probably be standard. You'll probably even see services like Steam on next gen consoles. You should forget about game mods though, it's going to be like making a home movie and comparing it to a Hollywood blockbuster. | By your logic every DVD player costs the same price. That is not the case at all.
I also don't understand your argument about single CPU manufacturers, that's just silly. That's like saying Panasonic makes every single TV out there or Dell makes every PC in the world. Consoles are an electronic appliance, not a component.
This is a great idea and the only real way consoles will become truly mainstream like DVD players and the like. All the console wars do is confuse the average consumer. A single console standard would warrant competition from different manufacturers, not hinder it. Duh? Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I can see Microsoft doing this in the future. 360 and PC games are already pretty close as far as development goes. It would be nice to play a game on a future Xbox in your living room with your friends and also being able to play it on your PC alone if you wanted to. Flag this | Edit this post |

| Not really. I just returned a 8800GTX two weeks ago. The driver support is still terrible for Vista. It's a crap shoot on if the card works as expected for you. I couldn't even use Media Center to watch TV with a 8800, which is ridiculous considering my X1900XT does so fine.
I'm waiting for the new cards, both Nvidia and ATI has crappy 1st generation DX10 cards, but at least I know ATI has working drivers for Vista. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Epic ditched Atari as their publisher in 2004. Besides, what makes you think developers have to pay publishers? Epic has never published a game their self. They're strictly a developer. Microsoft published Gears of War and Midway is publishing Unreal Tournament 3. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | I don't see how anyone can agree to Silicon Knight's side of the story aside from the fanboys who think Too Human is the second coming. Epic's licensing policies are clear and concise. I personally hope SK goes down in flames. The industry doesn't need crap like this. Flag this | Edit this post |

| | Except for the fact that a decent gaming PC is more than double the cost of the PS3. I'll be playing it on PC myself, but the PS3 will pretty much have the "full experience" since it will allow players to play custom maps and mods as well. Flag this | Edit this post |
