Congrats jacobvandy! Sorry you didn't win Dave, but considering how long it took for the judges to decide you know it was close! Don't let it get you down, writing is, after all, extremely subjective.

Well Dave I haven't had the time to make detailed comments for each of your articles this time around cause I'm extremely busy, but I have read them all and on the whole you win in my book by a small but not insignificant margin. :)

Well done to both of you though, the average level of quality was very high!

Not quite a drop-in upgrade, some of got stuck using chipsets like the 925X, which can't handle the dual cores at all - so I'm still stuck with my single-core 3.4Ghz Prescott. Only plus side is that the current C2D mobos will still take my Prescott, which means I could upgrade bit by bit, starting with the motherboard.

On a separate note though, remember how I told you I won't even come back here if you don't get through to the next round? I'm really glad that the judges here have displayed good sense and that you've gotten as far as you have already. Way to go!

Now that I've seen the other articles, all I can say is:
If you don't get to the next round, I'm not even gonna bother with it!

Good luck :)

Ah, well my 0 knowledge of consoles shows there. However, support is one thing (like output sound to 5.1) but it doesn't necessarily have to be well implemented (like just piping the same stuff on all 4 satellites maybe).

I see your rating has taken a further beating despite the fact that I bumped you up, well, don't be discouraged by some of the folks here.

I really don't see why you have a rating of 43% right now, looks like some people are still practising down-voting. [At least I bumped you up to 50% heh]

Good effort, even if a bit short. A couple more games wouldn't have hurt (to see if all games implement 5.1 well, or even support it, etc).

I thought this was pretty good in general. Mind you, I don't really believe that the 6.9-based drivers achieve their results fairly, but that's nothing to blame you for heh.

In terms of improvement, I would have definitely appreciate a couple more games, especially the ones that are often used elsewhere for benchmarking (FEAR maybe, Quake, UT and/or Oblivion). I think that may have helped us determine whether the DH drivers were just optimised for a couple specific synthetic benchmarks. As for other people commenting on your formatting, that first paragraph could really be cleaned up a little.

8 from me!

I'm surprised you sort of went out of your way to try to find the reasons for the slower performance in Vista whilst neglecting the widely-accepted view that it is due to the still immature drivers. Heck, nVidia got a real beating from consumers for the fact that they didn't release a driver for the 8800 for Vista for several months after launch, so the one they had to rush out was obviously not going to be perfect, and ATI has been improving theirs but it's also naturally not yet at the same level as XP's since they've been working on that for many years.

Indeed, I was just about to give it a 5 due to the poor grammar and lack of formatting, but then read your comments and decided to also postpone my judgement until this guy has a chance to fix it up a little (or a lot!).

A thorough review that clearly shows you spent a lot of time on this and put a substantial amount of effort into it. Well done.

Now comes the (hopefully constructive) criticism. Personally when I read the title, particularly "Next-Gen", I expected that the laptop would have more graphics horsepower than a X1600. The games you tested are also hardly next-gen. Yet the laptop struggles with some of them as it is, clearly implying that it would not do well with real next-gen games. On top of that, there are loads of mistakes and badly-constructed sentences. I don't like discriminating against non-native English speakers (writers :p) but at this level it's gonna set you back.

No problem, you're welcome :)
Although I had always known that games installed on a separate drive were in some cases noticeably faster (esp for load times and whatnot), I was glad to see some real figures.

By the way, it's not me that rated your article a 6, I definitely think more highly of it than that!

Edit - I went ahead and gave you a 9. Good luck!

I haven't quite decided what rating to give you and might forego a rating altogether since I can't seem to make up my mind, however I did feel it was a well-written article on a very valid subject. Personally I'd run my OS on a RAID0 and my games on a separate drive or another RAID0 array. Obviously I can't blame you for not having the hardware to try those configurations.

One little thing:
"Due to the human factor involved in controlling the stopwatch, anything greater than 2/3 of a second in time difference should be considered to be a tie."
I think greater should be smaller, no?

Nice work!

There were things that could have and should have increased performance that you didn't even mention, let alone test in my opinion. For starters, having AA on is somewhat misguided, that should be the first thing to go when trying to improve performance.

Second, you really needed to at least mention that Windows XP would have probably had better results, and to be honest as someone that comes across as a gamer it's amazing to me that you've already gone with Vista.

But that's just the constructive criticism, on the positive side it's well-written and it's clear you did put a lot of time and effort into the benchmarking!

Thanks for the words of comfort, it was just (understandably, I think) somewhat discouraging to see others put down my effort without justification. I'll survive ;)

Another rating of 1? And no comments? Are you people just giving 1s out of spite? If you really think it's bad, at least please provide some constructive criticism.

Heh, considering you gave me a 7 and now the second vote has pulled me down to 4, means the second vote was a 1. Someone was being very generous there :p

Thanks for the kind words. As for the pics, I only have a camera phone so I figured I wouldn't bother initially, but after you mentioned that I should have included them I rushed and made some thinking maybe they hadn't turned off the editing just yet... They have. :p I will keep that in mind for the future though!
