» $1 Million In Revenue For Xbox 360 Call Of Duty 2 Map Packs

During Activision's financial conference call today, company execs stated that the two Microsoft points based multiplayer map packs for the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 2 have been "very, very profitable", generating nearly $1 million in revenue so far. During the Q&A session following the prepared remarks, the execs gave more specific figures, saying that the free map pack for the game has been downloaded 334,000 times. The Skirmish map pack (400 Microsoft points) was downloaded 105,000 times and generated $368,000 in revenue. Finally, the Invasion map pack (800 Microsoft points) has been downloaded 66,000 times and has generated close to $500,000 in revenue.

These little mini packs are such bullshit business models. The programmers making these levels will see none of the huge profit beyond their salaries.

I not sure if there is anything "new" regarding these maps (art for example), or if they are just creating the maps using tools and art that was already "paid for" by the sale of the game itself.
So my point is: is this almost all profit (except what little the level designers get paid) or is there some real risk involved (money wise).
I also wonder if these downloadable content will be really popular in the future and if it will turn out like in the music business were the RIAA gets all the money (this case MS and EA) and the artists (this case level designer) get prearranged sum with no regards how much money is actually made of the content.

Normally it works out 60% and 40% for a PC game with the publisher making the 60% and the developer taking the 40%. Activision is probably making around 60% and the developer is probably making only like 30% after Microsoft takes 10%.

I wonder if the level designer gets a percentage or if the company paid him flat $1k-10k for the work and the executives pocket the difference (close to $860K).

I'm sure after R&D and other expenses the final profit is far less than a mil. And I don't think the level designers saw much of it.
