» Image Quality Showdown: ATI vs NVIDIA August '06

In this article, Brandon and Jakub take a closer look at the visuals produced by ATI and NVIDIA's latest graphics cards. Not only do we compare baseline AA image quality, but we're also going to compare ATI's adaptive AA with NVIDIA's transparency AA to see how well they live up to the hype. Finally we'll address the issue of texture shimmering by including actual gameplay video footage in Battlefield 2. Is it really a problem or is it an overblown topic? Judge for yourself after reading this article!

Why is it, you do an image quality showdown, and then focus on all the things you know Nvidia will come out on top on. There are plenty of things ATI has going for it's IQ aswell, and you've intentionally skipped over them with the subtle hint that maybe we'll see some HQAF tests in the distant future. Why not show the stuff ATI is good at first, then let everyone wait for part 2 to see how great Nvidia is at AA?

Sorry but I reckon that's BS, you either show the whole picture or show none at all. I'm sticking your site on the bias list with countless others.

looking past the obvious fact that this comparison is incomplete, this article has the tone of "conclusiveness" to it.

it is also misleading in statements such as:

"the optimizations (nvidia's) produce a sharper point of delineation where the card switches from low detail to high detail textures, creating clear steps of detail change relative to the smooth transition of ATI’s upcoming hardware."

which makes it sound as if one has to purchase ati's upcoming hardware to benefit from this, when in fact it applies to all ati 1k series hardware.

i'm quite disappointed in the overall lack of objectivity this article seems to reflect.

I dunno how you can say the article has a tone of conclusiveness to it when we clearly state at the end that we're working on Part 2, and are asking for feedback for that article.

"ATI’s upcoming hardware" = Radeon X1950 XTX. The reason it's stated that way is because we're using the X1950 for the screenshots/vid coverage, but as we clearly stated on page2 the IQ comments apply to ATI and NVIDIA's other high-end cards, not just the 7900 GTX and X1950 XTX.

Finally, it's hard to be objective on a topic that's subjective in nature. What looks good to one person may look bad to another. We stated this at the outset.

» Are you blind ?
Sorry for this to be my fist post but man this article is totally miss-leading.

3DMark
"it is almost impossible to tell a difference"

To me its obvious Nvidia isnt doing AA nearly as good as ATi yet you cant see the differance at all.
That in it of itself is troubling to say the least.

The article is full of ATi shortcoming from your perspective yet you can't seam to find any Nvidia ones.

HDR+AA ?

Nvidia does a very poor job with HDR. Wonder why that wasn't tested. There transitioning from lights to darks are extremely poor. Like its doing the transition in software mode.

Another site had a Image Comparison with HDR and it look very aweful on Nvidias. All the shadows were blocky and the lighting didn't transition as smooth or at all. Looked more like the entire image was brighten instead of transitioning the light sources and its effect on the enviorments. Cheap way to do it but that wasnt looked into or doesnt matter to you guys.

I think in the conclusion on pg 6 we called it a draw on AA quality.

RE HDR IQ: That's a good suggestion and something we will definitely look into thanks.

Overall maybe its a draw but by your own 3DMark PNG files its not.

Right behind the center soldier there is a vertical brownish support beam against the wall to the huge canistor or resivoir thing .

ATI 4xAA/16xAF
http://firingsquad.com/media/hirez.asp?file=/hardware/ati_nvidia_image_quality_showdown_august06/images/17.png

Nvidia 4xAA/16xAF
http://firingsquad.com/media/hirez.asp?file=/hardware/ati_nvidia_image_quality_showdown_august06/images/18.png

Nvidia doesnt smooth it out and it stands out like a sore thumb right in the center of the screenshots.

Also if you look at the side of the crates or boxed that same soldier is standing the Orange lines are completely visable on the ATi screenshots where as in the Nvidia screenshots they are gratuadetly thinned out.

Probably also want to explane the differance of..
Nvidias using FP16
&
ATi using FX16
+
MultiSampling

How about disabling the AI in ATI CP and getting 100% better image quality ingame ????

Do this and rewrite the article...

» Totally biased article
NOW that is a sad article, did nVidia payed you?

To get the SAME results as nVidia cards did on your tests with ATI, just DISABLE THE ***** A.I. IN THE CONTROL PANEL!!!!!!

You have it set on "advanced" and it WILL ALWAYS produce lower quality image, so do yourselft a favor, read and learn how to configure cards, and then you can write an article!

Else, don't bother writting ok?

As I said a couple posts down, in Part 2 we're going to dig deeper into the control panel, and turn on/off the settings a bit more. We wanted to get this article up though to coincide with the X1950 launch so you could see the IQ we were getting for those benches.

Now that we've got more time as I said, we're going to dig into the control panel of both companies for the follow-up article. Any feedback you'd like to provide on that, include it here.
