» ATI Radeon X1950 XTX Performance Preview

With 48 pixel shaders, 512MB of GDDR4 memory operating at 1GHz (2GHz effective), HDCP support, and an all-new redesigned cooling unit that runs much quieter than the X1900 XTX, ATI's Radeon X1950 XTX is certainly designed to impress. But does the new card live up to the hype? Find out in today's article!

Any words of when and what the new DX10 cards will be called ? I dont care if they are Nvidia or ATI as long as they have DX10 support.

Nishua.
I assume you're after a hardcore DX10 gamers box......well you could be waiting until Feb-March of next yr, cause Vista may not be out till then{the GPU's will come out regardless, and offer insane grunt for all existing games}....but you need Vista and ATI DX10 R600{G80 for Nvidia}.

IMO, one must wait until a sufficient amount of software is available before one commits to hardware purchases, IOW, I wouldn't buy a DX10 PC until Vista came out and 3 or more games/apps popped up as well.

If Crysis is delayed, then that fucks up everything....Crysis is a killer app/game....you can get 850x480 SD downloads of this game....it's looks insane graphically and technically{realism}, and Crytek have proven themselves with solid gameplay{Far Cry being the best FPSer of all time IMO}

No DX10 support until the next gen cards come out later this yr.....so I wouldn't buy a high end card now{but that's just me, it depends on what resoultion and IQ you must have}.

Sitting on the fence? Anybody wealthy enough to even be able to consider buying something so extravagent can easily just buy both!

As for "which is better" argument? For 99% of folks that doesnt matter, 90% of them are choosing 7600 (or lower) with which ATI can't really compete. And, the remainder go for low power efficient 7900's. That alone doesn't hurt ATI. But, the much smaller G71 die with less transistors, and simpler PCB means in a price war with nVidia ATI will detroy what remains of their profit margins. The alternative is to lose market share.

Since day 1 when X1800/X1600's were released back in 2005, I've been hoping for the mystical X1700 to save the day. Nearly a year has passed.

Demi....forget about fake gamers with 7600GS/GT{both are garbage these days}....7900GT/1900GT are what real gamers have or aspire to as a minimum.

I think everybody accepts that Crysis will be an amazing technological achievement, and that will require a 7900GT DX10 equivalent to play properly.

I think a 7600GT will handle Crysis at 800x600....but never admit to playing it at that poverty resolution, man up as I suggested when the time is right.

Crysis.
Stalker
Bioshock.
BIARMS 3
UT2007 are the games that demand a mansized upgrade.

FYI...1950XF will be approximately the grunt of the mid range DX10 card, ie, we'll probably get 3 meaningful flavours, and I'd say a XF will comfortably run next gen of games, but will obviously lack max IQ{DX10}

The best single high end card ever produced.
A worthy successor to the 9700pro.
Nvidia's response is to assemble $1200AUD 7950...LOLOLOLOL

OK I will feed the troll. The 7950 is a about $80 more expensive than the X1950 RRP (approximately 18% more). But the 7950 does offer substantial framerate benefits in most benchmarks. I am sitting on the fence for my next purchase and would like to know which of the two is the quietest and which draws least power. I suspect the X1950 would draw less power (as well as being smaller for my case). The only thing that puts me off the X1950 is the poor overclocking performance. How well does the 7950 overclock?

I don't know which is quietest or which draws the least power...I doubt there's that much in it...all I know is that the 1900XT's were obscenely loud, and ATI have rectified that.

FYI, I'm a fanboy of good products...and I wish "both" Nvidia{Hyundia} and ATI{Merc} would ensure that the orginal cooler is relatively quiet.....otherwise just hand over all high end stuff to HIS.
