» CPL To Develop Their Own Multiplayer FPS

The Cyberathlete Professional League's head Angel Munoz has talked in the past few years about developing their own game for use in their tournaments, rather than games from other developers and publishers like Quake 3, Counter-Strike and Painkiller. Now it seems that plan has evolved into more than just talk. The CPL, currently holding its Winter Championships in Dallas, has officially announced their inital plans for Severity, its own multiplayer first person action game. The game will be developed by the CPL's own game studio and will be headed up by Tom Mustaine, who was the co-founder and until recently the Vice-President at Ritual Entertainment. According to the press release the game will be developed for both PC and consoles and will start testing for game players by the end of 2007. Here is a snip:

Severity is a multiplayer first person shooter (FPS) focusing on team-versus-team and one-versus-one play modes. Additionally, the game offers unprecedented support for gamers worldwide playing in online and live competitions both casually and professionally.

Severity is built on technology created by developer id Software and includes enhanced tournament support, spectator modes, as well as detailed player and tournament statistics tracking. By leveraging the enthusiastic community and practical experiences of the CPL, Severity is uniquely positioned to set new standards while raising the bar for competitive multiplayer games.

Gamers must be "pseudo elitist pricks" to apply to play the game, also a false sense of self worth from having "l337 skillz" is necessary.

about time, i'd thought they would do this sooner. its just common sense

now they don't have to pay licenses to play other people's games because they'll be playing their own.

also it'll be an instant success because every pro gamer is pretty much forced to buy it.

Blah, Doom3 engine. They should use Unreal Engine 3.

They should. UE3 delivers more bang for the buck CPU/GPU wise.

My guess is they chose the D3 engine for two main reasons.

First, the cost to upgrade to play Unreal Engine 3 is not going to be accessable to the mainstream audience.

Secondly, the D3 engine is very user friendly and has established itself as a modder-friendly program. UE3 on the other hand only has a couple games with it's engine and it's not proven as to how well modders can adapt to it.

I'm sure ID will ask for less royalty fees or money to rent (?) the engine aswell.

I wouldn't bet the license fee would be lower for UE3. I would assume for a game like this, both Epic/id would forgo licensing altogether.

And the Unreal 2 engine saw plenty of competent modding (Make Something Unreal contest anyone?). There is no reason why that would not move to 3.

For real man. UT2004 had some of the best mods on PC to date, to bad UT has never had the audience of HL/CS and Quakes.

Will it be like a TC for quake 4 or ET:quake wars?
