» Windows Vista Aero Glass Performance Hit in Games

With its new 3D user interface, we assumed Windows Vista's Aero Glass interface would come with a huge performance hit in games. After all, turning on all the eye candy in previous versions of Windows always came with a hit. So how much does game performance suffer with Aero Glass turned on? You may be surprised by the results!!

» Just a reminder....
This is supposed to be a site 'For the Hardcore Gamer", not people looking to see how Vista will run on their 286SX. So complaining about the AM64 3800+ is pretty ridiculous since it's single core old marchitecture, and for anyone calling themselves a 'hardcore gamer' that should be about the limit of what the majority need to know. As for 3rd world countries, not really a priority for most reviewers, nor is it for software prodcuers. Fact of life reviews focus on hardware and software generally available to Techie part of Asia , N/Am. and the Techie part of Europe.

BTW, I'd also like to see the windowed and spanned impact on gaming of Aero. Remember though windowed mode in Oblivion is a little tricky but doable for a crunch test.

For people wondering about Vista versus XP, go back to the review list and then click the one underneathh with the ATi tests for XP (32/64bit) vs Vista (32/64).

What about XP vs Vista Performance? How much performance hit if any is taken if we upgrade to vista?

What happens if i have dual display and my 2nd display still shows the Vista Sidebar when I play games in full screen mode on my primary monitor, does that mean Aero is still on and i'm getting a performance hit?

actually, when you use a program like my averhdtv tuner card, it turns off Aero, until I close the program. That might mean that when you guys are running windowed games, Aero will be turned off and your gpu will be dedicated to those games.

Aero was initially turned off only for OpenGL, then at some point they decided to keep Aero ON when OpenGL was running, and now it appears that they turn Aero off for DirectX games... and DirectX games don't have the performance issue of OpenGL games under Vista...

1 + 1 = ?

k, kinda off-topic here, but can someone please explain to me why they made some of the stuff on screen (semi)transparent, and then proceed to blur the shit out of what's underneath so you still can't freaking read it???
I understand legibility of the stuff in the front is a concern, but if this is the only way to solve that, why bother with transparency at all?

Because the windows don't appear as 'heavy' when they have translucent areas. You can always adjust the opacity to your hearts content if you're that concerned... ;-)

because it looks cool. what the hell is the point of any of the visual effects? you might be able to tweak that, though.
