» The 10 Most Important Games Of All Time

The New York Times has an article on efforts by a committee supported by Stanford University, the University of Maryland and the University of Illinois to create a way to preserve the best video games of all time in the Library of Congress. The proposal, which is similar to the National Film Registry, named the top 10 video games of all time as selected by a committee of five (including famed game developers Warren Spector and Steve Meretzky). Here is their list:
  • Spacewar! (1962)
  • Star Raiders (1979)
  • Zork (1980)
  • Tetris (1985)
  • SimCity (1989)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
  • Civilization I/II (1991)
  • Doom (1993)
  • Warcraft series (beginning 1994)
  • Sensible World of Soccer (1994)

    » QUAKE
QUAKE should be on any top 10 important or revolutionizing games lists of all times.

Plain and simple it ushered in the era of internet gaming and 3d video cards. Name another game that had as much of an impact to hardware/software/internet as Quake.

people toss on there wolf 3d and doom.. listen, yes it was revolutionary! but not in the same realm as quake.

Quake "happened" because of DOOM. Quake was important, but was just an evolutionary step from DOOM. But yes, you're dead right on one point, Quake really kick-started the 3D video card industry.

Well according to this logic (which admittedly I do have some sympathy for), the original Wing Commander should be on that list since that was the ti*tle that spurred the widespread use of discrete sound cards.

Lets not forget that Quake started professional gaming.

I think they're trying to point out points in chronological time that brought out absolutely new, fresh ideas that hadn't been seen before. Although I do agree, SMB3 is an odd addition over the 1st game.

-Warcraft series was leaps and bounds more popular than the C&C series and the name carries much more weight to this day. Even despite Dune II being probably the start of modern RTSes, Warcraft brought it to the mainstream
-SimCity deserves a spot right there with Civilization as games that began an entire genre of games that were seen as 'cool' to play. Look at the commercial success of both.
-While Wolf3D was the first 'true FPS', Doom is what really started the absolute 'OMG did you see this game!' craze. How many people DIDN'T at least see the shareware version?
-Although I do think they missed the spot with the sports title.

What I like to know is what criteria do they use to evaluate importance of games.

For example, do you pick games that started a popular genre of games and as result had many clones maybe.

Then there are games that implemented new gameplay, like non-linear story, multiplayer (co-op, vs, MMO).

Another criteria would be if the game used some new technology, like the first true 3D game.

Also there is the commercial successes of games, some even made platforms popular, like Tetris (GB), Donkey Kong (NES), Sonic (SG).

Finally cultural impact of the games, like MK, Doom, GTA and WoW.

This is how it should be done.

Alas people are just doing these sorts of shoddy lists to get quick ad revenue. I saw a "10 worst games of all time" list last week that had absolutely no research done. It was a blatant rip off of the more famous one listed somewhere else (that I don't remember) with Custer's Revenge and E.T. and such. Then it had an honourable mentions section with entries like The Typing of the Dead, which if anything would go on my "most underrated games of all time" list. They just threw in whatever they thought was a "bad" concept, and from the descriptions had clearly not played the games.

This would frustrate me less if this list wasn't government sponsored and wasn't meaning immortality in the library of congress, for a bunch of games picked by 5 people.
