» Welcome Vandy!!
In case you didn't notice, this is the first official Vandy article on FiringSquad. Vandy, as you all know, was the winner of our Editor's Challenge earlier this year. I for one happen to really enjoy his writing style and look forward to reading many more articles in the near future and beyond.

Welcome to FiringSquad Vandy!!!!

Why is he asking for donations for a monitor than if he won the contract? Are you guys only paying him in sand dollars? :)

We all look forward to more articles from the entire FS crew!

We need a poll to see if the FS community has more system builders or system buyers. Also, the article was pretty good, but it seemed like one big advertisement for ABS. The article was 13 pages, but didn't go too far technically. For instance, this case has built in water cooling, yet we know nothing of what temps you can expect. Is the pump strong enough to put water blocks on the GPUs? Also, I liked the attempt in using more descriptive wording, but I think it became excessive at times and took away from the article (great for a novel, not so much for a technical article). When was the last time FS did an article on a system like this?

I agree, I had to double check to make sure I wasn't reading the Press Release section of the news. Maybe if FS had a comparison between a similar system build like the way Maximum PC magazine does, where they build an ultimate PC and use it as a comparison against all High end PC they review.

My sense was he just really liked playing around with the system, despite the high price. And, since he didn't have to pay to play, that came through in the writing.

"Maybe it will address the mysterious deal-breakers some of you complain about but never seem to mention specifics on"

I don't understand your comment. Why change operating systems? Just for the sake of changing them? As of right now, there are so very few reasons to change, that people aren't. I don't think it is because of mystical "deal breakers", it is just because there really aren't many reasons to change. Why go through the cost and hassle of a new operating system if you don't need to?

it's more toward the people saying they'll wait for a service pack before upgrading, as if it would magically solve everything and make it worth their purchase. except, they never say what is wrong, just that it needs fixing.

most of the time, it seems like they're just saying it because other people have.

Most people don't have time to research problems with their purchases. It is pretty common knowledge that most new products have issues that don't usually get resolved until there is an update. The same goes with new operating systems, games, even cars and phones. Most people I know will never buy a car during it's first model year, but then I was an automotive engineer before I started working for the Department of Defense. There is just an assumption that the brand new product will have unforeseen issues, because it is very difficult to truly debug a new product before it gets full scale testing in the real world.

I agree in that every new product does have issues and bugs and it's such a shame to see people neglect that factor.

The problem I see is that with all the collective complaining the "expert" users do, you would think they would dive into the millions of line in code and show us how it all should be done.

But they don't, because all they can do is complain...

Again, I don't know anyone who will buy the first iteration of the iPhone either. There are plenty of people who always have to have the "newest" thing out, but there are probably far more people who will only buy established products, because they like to be safe and conservative with their money.

I game at resolutions that low. I have a 17 inch LCD and a single 7800 gtx 256. The higher resolutions are not supported by my monitor and even if they were my XFX coupled w/ my Venice 3000 wouldn't be able to push playable frame rates.

» Its a "No Brainer"
Ever heard that comment before?
That is what this system delievers.

I dont have to use my brain to,
design
implement
price shop
build or
trouble shoot this system;
and it only costs 26% more than if I did use my brain. I believe most people willing to piss away 6k on an overpriced, outdated in 2 months system (i.e., Americans), would call that a bargain.
