» Drivers
Are there new drivers released for the new cards? I just checked the ATI website, and it doesn't even give an option for the HD 3870/3850 when looking for drivers. The newest card it shows is HD 2900XT. I just bought the HD 3850 on an impulse buy, but I haven't read anything about updated drivers for the card.

The 7.11's are expected to come out tomorrow, but the drivers that come with the cards are beta 7.11's along with the crysis hotfix.

from somebody who hung on to AGP with the claws of steel before relenting and getting 7900GTX:

1. Overall. Put side by side, you'd be hard pressed to distinguish which is which. HD3870, 8800GT, 8800GTS all in same "performance" group.
2. Disappointed. Hundreds of folks whinning. Yeah the HD3800's are a great bargain, but I guess some folks are still waiting for a competitor to 8800Ultra (or 8800GTX for that matter... X2900XT fell short as did the HD3800s).
3. Value: A few benchmarks HD3870 faster than 8800GT. Many 10% slower. A few 20% slower. But 20% cheaper. I guess its as difficult to decide which to buy as choosing between the 8800Ultra and 8800GTX.
4. Power: Both about 100W. HD3850 significantly less, hence single slot.
5. Noise: All websites say HD3800's are quitiet. But, its not like 8800GT was typhoon.. small difference.
6. UVD: Ofcourse AMD H264/VC1 decoding better... but how many here are buying such a card to play Blu-ray? Its a welcome bonus.
7. Availability: Time will tell. Should have better idea couple weeks from now. But, its not so good on nVidia side. Sure the trolls will link to website showing 8800GT at $220 (some even quote lower!). But, in reality, retailers are pushing up to $300 and above ($330 not unusual). Supply and Demand. Not surprising to early adopters of 7900GT. Most sites show out of stock for 1-2 weeks.

on AMD site, prices are very close to MSRP, but supplies quickly ran out due to high demand (mind you its only few days after release).

Which team will "win" will inevidably be decided by who can get more supply out to the market.

» Crossfire X?
AMD plans on us buying a mobo with 4 PCI-e slots (plus slots for physics, sound, etc) and then populating it with 4 power hungry, heat generating and noise producing cards? I dont think there is enough room on a ATX or BTX board for all these slots. Furthermore, if AMDs solution is the same speed and the same price as Nvidia's solution I would find it easier to set up 2 GPUs than 4 GPUs (Image the dual processor, 4 GPU water cooling setup!). 4 GPUs have I higher failure rate than 2 GPUs. Lastly, I dont think that AMD can produce competitive boards that sell for half as much (Nvidia: 2*1000 = AMD: 4*500). How is AMD going to make their solution cost effective, when compared to Nvidia's solution, at a particular price point?

These cards are the least power hungry, and quietest DX10 performance cards out. They are much quieter than the 8800GT from every source I have read. I wish the performance was a little better, but I may pick one up anyway at those prices. I love quiet components, and I know from past experiences that it is best to have the newest DX compatible card available to enable you to play games in the future. (I can't play Bioshock, because my X800 XL doesn't support SM 3.0, and I can't run STALKER with dynamic lighting for the same reason.)

Do you think AMD really expects the masses to buy 4 GPUs?? You have to do some detective work just to find it mentioned on their website.

So why are you bitching about having more options again?? Nobody's forcing you to buy 4 cards. Do you just like having all your decisions made for you?

"How is AMD going to make their solution cost effective, when compared to Nvidia's solution, at a particular price point?"

I guess you can't. Or do you enjoying paying twice as much for potentially the same performance and then get grumpy when some points out the stupidity of that "option"? Maybe you should try reading the comment before commenting; you would reduce the chance of looking like an ass.

I honestly don't care if it's a bit slower than the 8800GT. I know from first hand experience that ATI drivers a lot more stable in Vista. The lower temps and UVD is the deal maker. My HD 3870 is coming tomorrow.

Wow, looks like these are in stock and actually selling at the 180/220 price points. Thats awfully tempting with the 8800gt being hard to find and marked up so badly.

Also, I didn't see any overclocking results for the 3850 in the article. Can you get it near 3870 speeds?

No unfortunately you can't at the moment. Overdrive REALLY limits the GPU and memory clock speeds to the point where I didn't think it was worth the hassle. I think it was something like 20MHz on the core and 50MHz memory.
