» NVIDIA AGEIA PhysX Acquisition Interview

Yesterday we had a chance to discuss the details of the AGEIA acquisition with NVIDIA PR head Derek Perez. Why did NVIDIA decide to purchase AGEIA and what kind of future products can we expect from the company? All these questions and more are asked inside!

» this interview sucked
I mean this constructively -- it's not that your questions were inadequate, but it is that your interview subject is a PR shill with nothing but fluff spin to contribute, and also that you did not ask follow-up questions to press any of his statements.

Insist on interviewing someone with decision power, not their spokesmens' spokesman.

Is there that many stupid kids on here? By Nvidia acquiring Ageia,1 thing just happened..They are about to put this chip on all their video cards, which in turn is about to change the way we play games and its going to take it to the next level..If people think they are just doing this to vaporize them, you are an idiot..This isn't a competing company, its a company that is just physics. They will add this to the card,so eventually everyone will have it and the toll physics take on the video card or cpu will be a non issue..Aren't any of you capable of thinking out side the box? Also,ScottWilkins, you don't know what your talking about. They aren't behind anyone! They are in front of everyone..There is Havok, who else? What has Havok done lately..Look for AMD to buy Havok soon!

Putting physics on a GPU is fucking useless. Great we'll have more pretty effects when playing a game, who cares? You people don't understand that GPU physics means second order physics while having the ageia PPU add-in card meant that you could have first and second order physics. Second order physics calculates particles, "eye candy" things that add nothing to the game while first order physics actually affects gameplay. This nVidia takeover is only going to mean second order physics from now on, they've fucked us over. I couldn't care less about second order physics and neither should you, if they want to really improve gaming, then we need to push first order physics.
If nVidia does exactly what I think they're going to do, then I'll be sure to never support their products again because they'll have destroyed the best thing that could've happened to video games.

Yeah, it was purchased only this past September, and commented extensively on this board, so I guess YaThink doesn't remember back that far.
The physics wars are different than the normal FPS fights between Nvidia/ATI. They are both free to develop their own tech as long as it is compatible to the current Microsoft Direct X spec.
With physics there is no spec, and it is just like the High Def video wars where everyone wants just one tech, but it has to be their own tech and they refuse to support the other.
Even with nVidia's high end success, the numbers are all in the low/middle end, and its still about 50/50 there.
No game company is going to make a game for less than 50% of the market, so physics, no matter who's, will only continue to be used trivially.
Hopefully, Intel will stay out of the discreet video card market for a while, so everyone will keep using Havok.
Sadly, at this point for gamers, the best thing that could happen is for Microsoft to roll a physics standard into a future Direct X spec.

Just like nVidia. Swallow another company and obfuscate their talent. Expect nothing from this merger, just like the 3Dfx merger gave us, nothing.

'Ageia is an industry leader...'

it's also an industry of one

I don't personally think this will matter much either way, it's not like it mattered much before it..nvidia probably just bought them so amd/ati couldn't

No Ageia is not alone in the industry in whole. They are the only one to make a consumer level physics hardware processor, yes, but overall they are actually quite far behind in this area of many companies.
