» AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition Review

With its 2.5GHz clock speed, B3 stepping, unlocked multiplier, and aggressive pricing, AMD is catering the Phenom X4 9850 to enthusiasts looking to upgrade to quad-core without maxing out the credit card. But does the formula work? Let's find out!

I think the core due is the gaming chip of choice. Not enough (truly) multi threaded games. They might say they "take advantage" of multiple cores but I doubt that the code is optimized, just look at the benching results throughout the past year. Thus a higher clock is still better.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that this new chip is really only for people who already have AM2 or AM2+ boards and want a cheap upgrade, possibly from B2 chips. I believe this is AMD's way of saying sorry, we wanted your money and screwed you. Now these owners don't have to go to all the trouble of building a new system from scratch. If I was building a new system today, based on the review, I would still build around the E8500 if only because it has massive overclocking potential and has never had any problems.

Gosh Darn!?!?!?!

In the article, the question is asked "And so once again we’re faced with the decision: AMD or Intel?"

Surely they can't be serious. Based upon the benchmarks, the 9850 is dominated by the Q6600 and they still come to the conclusion that the comparison is a "wash" between the two.

This "fanboyism" has become rather desperate in nature and does nothing but to further erode FiringSquad's legitimacy as a reliable and unbiased site.

Other than low-res gaming, I'm confused as to where the Q6600 dominated? When the games got to a normal res, it was a stalemate. Are you telling me you game at 800x600 with a quadcore cpu?

» Not the Point...
That's totally not the point. If you're looking at pure CPU performance under many tasks the Q6600 is indeed faster and trounces the Phenom 9850.
What you're referring to is that we look at the Graphics card performance and base our opinions of the two CPUs relative to the graphics bottleneck. This would be illogical.
New Faster Graphics cards come out every 6 months. Also you've got SLI, Crossfire, Tri/Quad Graphics configurations that would also help alleviate this bottleneck and further showcase the Q6600s dominance. In other words your assertion and logic is a fallacy. No offense I'm just used to disproving your argument.

The tray price for the 9850 is 14% lower then the QX6600, and it is also lower than the 9600s.

It's good enough, and will make Intel lower their prices.

The problem with every review which is done by someone who reviews for money, is that they never say "this thing sucks, don't buy it".

Just look at the benchmarks and skip the part in the conclusion which says the thing is good - whether it's truly good or not is something you need to judge. I mean, for fuck's sake, has any CPU ever gotten under 80% on FiringSquad?

Yes, the 9600 Black Edition reviewed about a week ago received a 70%. Pay attention.
