» EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT Akimbo SC Review

EVGA’s e-GeForce 8800 GT Akimbo takes one part value GPU and one part aftermarket cooling to create a powerful DirectX 10 board that delivers overclocked performance for less than $300 bucks.

I'm surprised you didn't include an 8800GTS for comparison in your benchmarks.

It would be reasonable to assume that those interested in the Akimbo would be GTS buyers looking to save a little money.

Don't you mean GTS buyers looking spend a little more?
"I JUST bought an MSI overclocked 8800 GTS (g92) for $199 after rebate on newegg"
Check it out, after rebates MSI 8800 GTS $215.
8800 GT Akimbo $250.

The GPU Comparison Chart on page one shows the G80 8800 GTS as a G92.

Editor's Choice suggests that the editor is recommending the product to the reader. Are you suggesting that the readers should simply ignore the editor's choices? If that is the case, then why have them. The editor gives us his opinion in the pro and con section of each article, does he not? Doesn't that make the editor's choice "opinion" award redundant? If I was not dependent upon firingsquad, or other review sites, for my information I would not care about the credibility of the author's suggestions but then I wouldn't be reading the articles either. I suggest you more carefully consider the social position of an "editor's choice award" and you will see the significance of the moniker and its implied importance to the reader.

No I'm not suggesting the readers should ignore the award, but use it as a good starting point when making a well informed decision prior to purchasing a product. Editors choice awards are opinions, well informed opinions based on facts and through testing, but they are opinions nonetheless. Personally I would use the group method versus the one man method in basing my decision to purchase a product, so I would go to other websites and see what other reviewers have to say.

Are you suggesting that I should begin my decision with a recommendation to purchase a product which is slower, more expensive and larger in size. This is a bad recommendation and it is further degraded by the fact that the author knew that this was the case. The only thing I don't understand is why you don't see a problem with this situation. Regarding the status of opinion; if it isn't a scientific analysis, something which review sites (including this one) do not engage in, then its an opinion and in this case it is a poor one.

» Editor's choice because why again???
I have to disagree with the Editor's choice award. I JUST bought an MSI overclocked 8800 GTS (g92) for $199 after rebate on newegg.... Cheaper and much faster out of the box than this card. I'd say wait for the 8800 GTS (g92) card's to get a sick rebate like they have been and pick one of them up. After I overclocked this baby even further I'm now getting MUCH faster than 8800 ultra performance for $199.... c'mon now the choice is obvious.

It's Editors Choice in comparison to other 8800 GT-class cards. I'm working on the 8800 GTS 512MB roundup now and make the exactly same argument in the opening of the article.

I understand that it is the fastest 8800 GT but how can a less powerful more expensive card be the editors choice? Thats like saying a Toyota which is slower and more expensive than a Honda, in the same racing class, is the editors choice because its the best Toyota. It doesn't make sense, it confused me as a reader (at first I thought this was a good article) and it affected my perspective of your credibility when I found out, after the fact, that this was the case (and you knew it!). I went from, "Wow, editors choice!", to "Ignore this moniker in the future as it is meaningless."

Agreed. Nothing in the review jumped out at me and made me say wow! this a great card. But it is the Editor's choice, not the readers choice award so there's no point in complaining, it's the man's opinion.

Agreed. If you want your GT to be faster, dual slot and willing to pay a few dollars more, you want a GTS. evga already sells a gts with higher clocks than this for less money. And you get the extra stream processors.
