| | (Post a comment) » Core i7-975 Extreme Edition OC'ed past 5GHzWith AMD demo'ing Phenom II parts OC'ing well beyond 6GHz, the OC'ing race between AMD and Intel appears to be on, with Intel supplying xtremesystems.org user fugger a Core i7-975 Extreme Edition processor for testing. When paired with a Gigabyte EX58-Extreme motherboard, fugger managed to hit speeds of nearly 5.3GHz with a Radeon 4870 X2 GPU and 1.5V of juice.
Intel's lead performance guru, and the father of Skulltrail, Francois Piednoel chimed in on the thread with his own comments on the processor as well, which uses Intel's new D0 stepping.
So what are the specs for the Core i7-975 EE anyway? The chip apparently will run at 3.33GHz, with a 133MHz base clock and 25.0x multiplier. L2 and L3 cache appear to be unchanged, and the chip uses Intel's new D0 stepping (versus today's C0 CPUs). The processor is expected to be released sometime in Q2 or Q3 of this year.
