» Overclocking the Radeon HD 5870

We weren't satisfied with the 900MHz core/1300MHz memory speeds we hit last week with our Radeon 5870 boards. We wanted to see how far ATI's latest flagship GPU could be pushed, and how well it could perform at those speeds. We also wanted to see which component delivered better performance results: OC'ing the memory, or OC'ing the GPU?

Fortunately thanks to AMD's GPU Clock Tool, we now have unlimited speeds on tap for OC'ing. Is 1GHz within reach? Find out in today's article!

Conclusions are somewhat valid. If GPU or bandwidth should have increased more, indicating other limitations (ie perhaps PCIE, CPU, driver, who knows?). Besides, such small % are close to margin of error.

Regretably, the OC results seem to indicate future OC or 5890 would do poorly with marginally higher performance.

chizow, nobody can compare with double HD4xxx bandwidth until we have 7.5Ghz GDDR5.

» Flawed Conclusions
"These results should finally put any lingering criticism of the Radeon 5870’s 256-bit memory interface to bed. Clearly this card isn’t being held back by its 256-bit memory subsystem with today’s latest games."

Not sure how you can come to this conclusion given the comparison to the 5870's bandwidth shouldn't be relative to itself, it should be relative to the 4890 and 4870X2.

While its true bandwidth overclocking has traditionally provided the smallest gains, the concerns about bandwidth arose from the fact the 5870 is a nearly complete doubling of the 4890 in every sense, except for bandwidth, which remains the same.

You increase everything on the 5870 by 100%, except for bandwidth, which remains constant, resulting in only a 30% increase which is not only much less than the potential maximum of a 100% improvement, its also less than the 4870X2 and 4890 CF, which have an effective doubling of bandwidth due to CF.

The only way you could come to your conclusion is if you increased bandwidth by 100% and it somehow failed to exceed the performance of the 4890 in CF or the 4870X2, but I seriously do not think that will be the case.
