| Thanks for the fair and frank review. I certainly wouldn't have minded waiting another six months for a version that played to the PC's strengths. I might even have paid $60, even knowing the game play would be extremely short.
One small bright spot, the consolization of PC games will eliminate the need for frequent upgrades. I won't be buying any of this kind of crap - why would anyone spend a thousand bucks on a gaming PC to get a $300 console experience? As more and more people move to consoles and the market for PC games (outside of MMOs and The Sims) shrinks, developers will have to relax requirements to squeak by. Until there's a widespread revolution in TV resolution, this is as good as it's going to get. I suppose Crysis will go down as the highwater mark of PC gaming graphics.» Login to reply to this

| I'm a CRPG guy (not the MMORPG stuff, I prefer them SP), and I was feeling all doom and gloom for awhile because of consolization as well. Especially after Bioware made JE and ME, which were far too consoley for my taste.
But DAO sounds promising, and KOR is looking good too. I don't really play fighting games, but Capcom did great with SF4 (pirated to all hell though).
I need an upgrade this December to play anything, but it's not all bad. IW sold out. Fine. As long as there are good PC developers out there, I'll spend my money elsewhere.» Login to reply to this |

| » Excellent honest review - thank you! I was so pleased to finally read a review that didn't automatically sink into the hype and praise the title.
I beat the single-player campaign yesterday in 5 hours and aside from experiencing a few beautiful set-pieces (ice-climbing, U.S. suburbs, Brazil) and the 3-4 minutes of actual stealth play, I was thoroughly unimpressed! Put briefly, Modern Warfare 2 has left its tactical roots and evolved into a total arcade game with an overwhelmingly frenetic pacing coupled with a thin and predictable story used as an excuse to tie in the half-dozen-or-so locations! After an hour or two into the game I just wanted it to end, which was disappointing because I felt just the opposite with the original Modern Warfare title.
1) I found that I could no longer enjoy the game on higher difficulties due to the lack of leaning. Oddly enough, enemies can not only lean but can BLIND-FIRE at you from around corners. As a highly trained operative, I would expect to employ some basic tactical prowess rather than fully exposing myself and being forced to gun down enemies Rambo style.
2) The vehicle sections were completely ridiculous. I found myself riding snow mobiles and boats at 200mph while firing an automatic pistol sideways with one hand (and being startlingly accurate!). On these levels I thought I was playing a different game all together; this kind of Hollywood stuff is definitely NOT "modern" warfare--it's james Bond!
3) The options menu was absent until AFTER starting the game. At which point I found that I could not separately adjust volume levels for speech, fx, and music. Either the weapon sounds were way too low or the speech and music was way too high. On a related note, the poor positional audio in this game led to a lot of frustrating deaths whereby I'd have an enemy shooting me in the back and I would be looking forward and up instead of being aurally clued to turn around (and I haven't had that problem with any other game I have, so it wasn't a result of me or my headphones).
4) Blood splatter effect is inappropriate. Unless I've been shot in the face, I don't see why my eyeballs should be covered in so much blood that I can no longer see anything at all. I died countless times because of this overdone screen effect coupled with the lack of lean (forcing me to usually take a hit or two from enemy fire before being able to neutralize the threat). As an alternative, I would point to GTA IV and Crysis as both having very convincing and gameplay-appropriate blood splatter effects.
5) Everything else: bland graphics in some areas, short campaign, excessive recoil damage, neglected PC community & multiplayer standards, unfairly priced, overly hyped, etc.
All in all, I was genuinely disappointed with the direction Modern Warfare 2 took from the tactical, emotionally-salient, and compelling previous standard. I also think it's a shame that so many millions of people willfully pay top dollar for hyped-up mediocrity. I'm so glad I borrowed this one from a friend. And, after beating the single player, I see little to no reason for a second visit. I won't even bother to attempt the multiplayer.
Anyway, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE REVIEW. 82 may have actually been slightly generous! LOL. But much fairer than the 90+ it's been getting on other sites.

| Your points are spot on. I pretty much thought the exact same things about the SP while I was playing a 'friends' copy (I eagerly bought every previous COD). I thought the story was extremely implausible and contrived, and I lost any sense of immersion. Does anyone seriously think the MW2 plot could actually come close to happening in the real world?? The game has changed from Saving Private Ryan and Blackhawk down to James Bond.
"200mph while firing an automatic pistol sideways with one hand..." haha I laughed reading this.
I thought there were quite a few examples of how the game catered to the game consoles. Quite a few textures looked to be very low resolution, especially things like signs. I have watched videos of multiplayer, and it looks kind of like the arcade mode in COD4 with point numbers popping up all over the place. I even saw a bunch of dollar bills popping out of an enemy that was killed. I can't verify, but I read a post that sniper rifle sway and gun recoil in general have been decreased, probably a concession to the console controller accuracy limitations, and to make the game easier to get kills for the casual gamer who isn't interested in spending a lot of time to develop skill. It's obvious that Activision (Bobby Kotick) laid down the law that the new MW2 was to be console focused from the ground up and made more casual gamer friendly, and then directly ported to the PC. Some people at IW probably protested, but Kotick has made it very clear that Activision is not interested in niche or enthusiast gaming, and will only focus on the mass casual gamer. They are leaving the enthusiast market to niche titles like ARMA2. So now that PC games are just console ports, we can now forget seeing first rate games that take advantage of the latest PC graphics hardware. The game consoles capabilities now indirectly represent a limit for future PC games. We are now seeing the effects the huge success of the Wii is having on the rest of the industry.» Login to reply to this Labotomizer (989) Nov 16, 2009 - 12:52 pm
| | The sad thing is PC gamers are okay with waiting a few months after a console launch if it's good. RE5 and SF4 come to mind. Both were excellent on PC because they took the extra time needed rather than make a direct port. They should've delayed the PC version 6 months and chances are some of who bought the console version would have bought PC as well for the additional PC features. » Login to reply to this |

| i see where you're coming from, but call of duty has never really been very "tactical." granted, not being able to lean removes much of the finesse you were capable of in previous games, but you always played a rambo-type hero that shouldn't count on much more from your allies than some suppressing fire. the stealth levels that allow you to choose whether or not to engage patrols involve MORE tact than previous games, if anything. the blockbuster action has always been a major draw of the series for me.
the vehicle sections have always been there, whether on rails with you firing small arms or commanding a tank in a very simplified manner. they're usually fun except on higher difficulties when it's near impossible to avoid dying... yes, the gangsta-glockin' is silly (you even get a "drive-by" achievement for a certain number of kills that way) and the accuracy you speak of is due to magical auto-aim that will make the bullets hit anything generally in front of you. i wish you could actually aim the gun, but i'm sure it was dumbed down to be played easier with a controller.
i gave it an 82 because i still think it's an above average game, if only slightly. in contrast, i gave CoD 4 a near-perfect score in my amateur review for one of the media blog contests. (that was for single-player only, but as far as i know, that game's MP didn't suffer the same issues this one's does, so it probably wouldn't have detracted from an overall score anyway.)» Login to reply to this |

| » Dissappointed After playing about 20 huours of multiplayer all I can say is how dissappointed I am. The game is good and there have not been any real issues getting in and playing,( I live out in the boonies a town of 4 thousand people so that was a concern, just finding people to play) I am dissappointed because the potential of what this game could have been on the PC. I love team death match and if I knew that it was capped at 6 vs 6 usally only 5 vs 5. I would have never purchased this. The maps are plenty big enough to support more players. Dont get me wrong the game is fun the weapons and ranking is a blast I just feel like I am playing by myself at times and I want my LEAN. Well this will have to do until Battlefield Bad Company, which is shaping up nicely. MW2 is a solid game could have been the game to end all others until IW pulled the plug. I would give it 6 out of 10.» Login to reply to this |
