(Post a comment) » Choosing The Right Power SupplyOne of the most overlooked PC components is arguably the power supply, yet it can have a significant impact on your system's stability. Did you know that adding extra fans can cause system instability if you don't have the right power supply? In our latest article, Alan looks at many contemporary power supplies and finds that they're inadequate for the task of powering an enthusiast's rig. This is a must read article if you're about to build a new PC. Check it out! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Choosing The Right Power Supply
i am building my first rig, and have choosen all my components (so i
thought). long story short case fans have the large power supply
type connectors i had planned on hooking into motherboard, mild
research led to fear of burning motherboard. so i started doing more
digging.i soon discovered choosing power supply is the most
difficult and crucial decision, put havn't found any guidelines.
untill i ran acrost this articale!!YEA!!! i really apriciate the
information and now have some idea of how to work the equation.
thank you thank you thank you

Excellent article on Power Supplies. The old adage is you gets what
you pays for is in full force here. I found PC Power and Cooling to
be one of best Power Supplies, for my needs and to top it all off
its make in the USA can you believe it. To go one even better they
will talk to you all day about power supplies, if you want too.

Yada-yada-yada. Two things nowhere mentioned are the copper content
and transformer cores. A power supply should be HEAVY else it is
certainly junk. The leads should be substantial instead of mere
wisps of hair-like strands. And it should be quiet, a sign of good
engineering and appreciation for what matters.

There is something wierd about the memory power consumption!
The article mentions 2amps on the 5V rail = 10W per 128Mb. I'm
wondering whether the 2amps is per dimm and not per 128Mb??
Because if it is per 128Mb, 4Gb would require 320W on the 5V rail,
add to this 2 cpu's with 10x12 = 120W/cpu on the 12V. Then one ends
up with 560W requirements with no hard disks, no cd & dvd no
anything. Add these as well end you end up with around 700W!!! Bear
in mind that most dual setups recommend 500 or 550W psu.
If it is per dimm then 4 x 2 x 5 = 40W and add the rest to arrive at
around 420W which makes more sence.

You could also add PC Power & Cooling to list of known good
power supplies. Warning...they're a little pricey too !
PS...Tom's Hardware had an interesting review on about 20 power
supplies not long ago. Several didn't pass the tests and smoked.
My recollection is an Antec True Power 330 or 380 exceeded it's
specs rather dramatically beating some claiming higher rating on the
+12V rail. Check it out !

What I really missed kinda was what happens to power supplies when
we run our fans at 7V instead of 12. Since we use the +5V as
refference point, things might get messed up? Currents or maybe
more?
