| | (Post a comment) » An Interview with AMD's Henri RichardRecently we had the chance to talk with AMD's Henri Richard, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing. Over the course of the interview, we discussed many topics, so many in fact that we had to split it up into two articles. In Part One of our interview, we discuss overclocking, multi-core CPUs, Athlon 64 FX, and AMD's 64-bit software transition. You'll also want to check out the section on Henri's decked-out gaming rigs. Enjoy! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Good interview, but in the next ones, could you edit out the
stuttering?
May be okay when spoken, but when written, it just sounds silly.

Well, he never named the P4 EE directly, in fact he never called it
a knee jerk reaction either. We all know what he's talking about
obviously, but he was subtle about it while at the same time getting
his point across.

Saying that the Pentium 4 EE "is not a great product"
wasn't very classy in my opinion. I like AMD, I strictly use AMD in
my builds because Intel doesn't offer a CPU with a price/performance
ratio as good as AMD's, and he's obviously right that the release of
the P4EE was a knee jerk reaction to the Athlon FX, but that
statement reflects bad on AMD as a company. If he had phrased it
differently and didn't specifically name the product he was trashing
it would have been ok... but that statement was just...

Hyperthreading does not make the p4 processor faster in every app.
Some app it hurts it because it's complex instruction dispatch unit
takes longer then a simpler implementation. It does make the p4
generally faster but by a very slight margin. That coupled with the
fact that it is a very hard feature to take advantage of in code
makes it less and less appealing. There are many other was to
increase preformance for games and HT is just not worth it in most
cases.

At least hyper threading is indeed faster than a regular processor
without it. The rating scheme AMD came up with has no benefit
whatsoever.
