| | (Post a comment) » NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra GDDR-3 PreviewWhile the GeForce FX 5900 XT has been stealing the spotlight in the mainstream segment, NVIDIA has been quietly refining its GeForce FX 5700 Ultra: just recently they began shipping 5700 Ultra boards with GDDR-3 memory. This new memory type boasts lower power consumption and therefore generates less heat, NVIDIA has also bumped the memory clock up to 950MHz. In this article we see how the new GDDR-3-based GeForce FX 5700 Ultra compares to the original as well as RADEON 9600 XT and GeForce FX 5900 XT. To spice things up a bit, we've also included benchmarks with the full retail version of UT 2004. See how the new card fares in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

In this market segment price means more than performance. A 5900 XT
does perform better than a 9600 xt, but I think you have to ask your
self how much would you pay for 9600 xt if the 5900 xt is at a
certain price.
That for me would be a difference of 15% or more. Initially the 5900
XT was $200, and the 9600 XT was $175. Currently the 5900 XT is
around $180 and the 9600 xt is around $155.
The marketting department at both companies do this calculation
every day and regulate cost which makes for great competition. I
think you'll find that right now 9600 xt is 10-15% from the 5900 xt
which is 10-15% from the 9800 pro.
I'd rather see the conclusion state the 5900 xt and 9600 xt are on
parity for fps vs $$ ratio. Buy either cause they're great cards.

Have you seen the RADEON 9800 PRO 256MB? The DDR2 modules ran so hot
ATI put heatsinks on them, but it was still a hot card, and the
reason they went to DDR2 was for the power savings.

I'd like to point out that it was actually ATi who have been working
closely with memory manufatures to develop the GDDR3 technology and
not nVidia.
The 5700 here shows that the memory is overkill in todays line of
cards but i recon nVidia just wanted to bet the first to implement
what ATi had taken so long to develop, i.e. the last 1.5 years.
The memory will obviously be seen in the R420 and N40. I think it
noble of ATi not to have wasted the time re-releasing old cards just
to blag GDDR-3 as a marketing tool. We will see its true power when
the time comes... just keep an eye on camp ATi

"While DDR2 consumed less power than conventional DDR memory,
DDR2 modules also generated significantly more heat than DDR."
Uhhh.... no. Almost all the power consumed by electronics
(especially memory) is dissipated as heat. The only reason DDR2 gave
more heat was because the clock rates were higher, and more power
consumed...

Wow, 2-3 FPS gain in a select few benchmarks, less than 1 FPS gain
on most everything. That's awesome.

"Buckle up everyone, because things are about to get really
interesting!"
Ok FS, does this mean that the "N" and "R" word
are in da'house?

No foolin' ... the multitude of name variations in graphics cards is
just getting ridiculous. The variation of processor names isn't far
behind. For all their technical expertise, the hardware geeks
really suck at names ... I can only imagine what their kids are
called. "Go to your room, Bobby v.1 Unique Urchin Pre-School
Edition 8700!"

robvia: We're keeping our custom demos private for now in order to
ensure that they're not optimized for. I'm sure you understand.
#7: Well, thanks to the faster memory there were some slight
improvements, but yeah nothing close to touching the 5900 XT.

Completely agree. Product numbers are so confusing.
All companies need to standardize, kinda like cars have 3 pieces of
info (manufacturer, make, model).
Company Name - Product - Speed
Nvidia 5700 U
ATI 9800 XT
Intel 3200 EE
