(Post a comment) » Budget LCD Roundup April 2005Anyone can get a bunch of LCD monitors together and show off some pretty benchmarks. However, if the reviewers don't understand the numbers theyre getting from the benchmarks its pointless. Fortunately, you have a trusted partner at FiringSquad, where our team of gamers, videophiles, and pro-photographers can make sense of pixel refresh times and colorimetry. Weve pulled those Dang brothers out of retirement to let them take a look at 8 different budget LCDs. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I have an 18ms panel, and ghosting/smearing in games is as good as
unnoticable, unless you put it under a microscope. And I don't think
there are much gamers with microscopes for eyes, and sure as heck
certainly not when you are gaming. I don't get what's with these
"hardcore" gamers and their beloved CRTs, whenever I
switched I noticed jack difference in both imagequality and 3D
performance.
So I'm as happy with my older generation LCD is with my CRT. And
LCD's are improving with every incarnation. So if you wanted a
!#!%% flatpanel LCD wich only takes away a few inches of your
working space, versus a !#!%% CRT wich takes a quarter of your
working space... I'm gonna buy a second LCD and maybe when I have 3
they'll take in as much as my CRT did...

What 19" LCD could you recommend for photo, web design &
text processing purposes?

Pfftt.
Lcds good what a joke.
What the posters don't explain is that Lcds you can either go
Tn+film or Pva lcd panel.
Tn +film = fast but crap color production meaning watching movies
suck $%@ on this panel.
pva = Nice color production but sucks for gaming.
It's kinda ironic with all these claims of leaps and bounds.
Heck, Lcd images deteriorate when you go outside native resolution
whereas on crts you can switch to any.
Low end lcds aren't even worth getting. Even the highend lcds are
separated into the panel types i mentioned.
It is a smarter move to get a bigger resolution monitor that is a
Crt that has good color production and good for games.
There is no perfect all solution for an lcd.
Either it's for movie viewing or gaming. You can't have both.
Lcds will only be good for office use, but sux for gamers (except
probably lan users who want portability)

DVI is certainly overrated. It's impossible for me to notice any
difference, no matter how much I look, between DVI and analog in
practical use.

How about Samsung 930B - it looks the same as 915N but it has DVI.
Can somebody confirm that it is a good monitor cause I am thinking
of buying it...
Thanks,

Nice article! Hope the follow-up will come soon!
More 19" LCD's! At this stage, no candidate in the article
screams: BUY!
Maybe Acer and LG has something interesting.

I am also interested in LCD monitors with a 1600x1200 resolution,
and I am willing to spend the extra money for a 20" or 21"
that handles this already. I have been looking at the ViewSonic
VP2000S (20") and the Samsung 213T (21") but after reading
this article I realize that I know almost nothing that really
matters about these monitors. Is there a reasonable way to judge
the quality of these monitors by comparing them to others with
similar technology, or would it be better to perform exhaustive
tests directly on these specific models? Are you considering
performing tests on larger LCDs such as these in the near future?
If not, what would you recommend as the best way for the average
consumer to judge the quality of these monitors without first
purchasing them?

This is a little off topic but I was wondering if the author (or
anyone) knows when 19" LCDs with 1600x1200 native resolution
will be available or if there are any plans to make them. Will
technology allow jamming all those pixels so close to each other
within the next year?

Since you, the authors, were considering a follow up with higher end
LCDs, I was hoping you would take a look at the new Apple displays.
Thoughts?
