| | (Post a comment) » BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra OC 512MB ReviewAt CeBIT this year NVIDIA announced the GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB, promising “new levels of performance and visual quality”. Today we're taking a look at one of the first GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB cards to hit the market, BFG's GeForce 6800 Ultra OC 512MB. The card not only ships with 512MB of memory, but like the rest of the "OC" lineup of BFG cards, faster than stock clock speeds. With two BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB cards in our hands, we took the 512MB GeForce 6800 Ultra card out for a spin in both single-card and SLI 512MB configurations, comparing it to GeForce 6800 Ultra, the RADEON X850 XT Platinum Edition, and finally, ATI's recently announced 512MB RADEON X800 XL. Do twin 512MB GeForce 6800 Ultras sound exciting to you? See the performance improvements 512MB brings to the GeForce 6800 Ultra inside!

Thats just not how technology works. Doubling the memory on a 9
month old core won't net you any fantastic gains. See benchmarks
for the 9800 pro 128/256 meg versions for an example. It won't kick
#&! in a year because by then, cards with next generation cores will
rule the day.
The reason cards like this are made is because you have sites like
FS schilling out and morons like Robvia buying.

Ok i dont know much about anything...
But isnt it possible that this card will start kicking #!$ in the
next year or so? At the moment its around the same speed as 256mb
6800 ultra so its not going to ruin any of your gameplay or
anything. And in a year or two when games start taking advantage of
the bigger memory and the drivers catch up, wont it really start
showing a big improvement over the 256mb versions?
If not, then why did they bother making it because it over double
the cost of the 256mb card and doesnt have any benefits yet?
So yeah... it makes me think it will be great in a year or 2. Either
that or they are just insane.

93% based on the technology? The same technology (oh, with another
256 megs of ram) that has been around for 9+ months? Did you eat
alot of paint chips as a kid?
The card does not outperform the 256 meg variant, and it costs more
than 2x as much. Someone with a brain (aka, not you) could spend
300-400 on a great card today, have it kick @&& for 1.5-2 years, and
buy another 300-400 dollar card after that. They'd have spent less
than you, and I guarantee the card that costs 400 dollars (heck,
250-300 dollars) in 2 years will outpace your overpriced and
overrated card.
"I play CS:S with all detail on full at 80+ fps."
Congrats, so do the people who spent half as much on their video
card as you did.

You guys are brutal.
I gave it a 93% based on the technology and staying on the cutting
edge. The hardware must come first before JC and Crytek will code
for it. GPU prices are becoming the same as CPU prices on the high
end. Gone are the days of buying a $200 card, prices have gone up.
Buying the best and spending more future proofs your investment.
Kids don't see it this way, they want to spend the least amount
possible, and upgrade a year later. I think people spend more this
way, but that's your decision. I have the BFG 6800 Ultra OC
Water Block, and it's a nice card, will last me 3 years at least. I
play CS:S with all detail on full at 80+ fps.

"There’s no way around it, when you pay $1,000 for a graphics
card, you expect the very best in performance, and that’s what this
card delivers." Yeah, right. Take a look at the benchmarks. It
DOESN'T deliver top performance, it sits there right next to the
256MB version, it's even slower in some cases. This does in no way
justify the price tag. Why pay almost twice the amount for the SAME
performance if you can also get a 256MB card?
"At the same time, know that you can achieve the same level of
performance today with a pair of GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB
cards" You can also achieve the same level of performance with
a SINGLE 256MB card.
Come on guys, I've noticed that BFG is one of your advertisers, but
please try to remain objective when doing a review...

82% score for a card with no noticable performance... so, how much
did this "review" cost?
Do your readership a favour, because this card should NOT be
recommended.
