In this article, we've gathered processors ranging from the 1.8GHz "Venice" Athlon 64 3000+, all the way up to AMD's latest Athlon 64 FX-57 CPU. We've also included the GeForce 6800 GT for comparison. See which processor(s) deliver the most bang for your buck, as well as which clock speeds you may want to shoot for when overclocking inside! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Hmmm....
Something wrong!
Your benchmarks are correct....your conclusion is NOT!
At low detail levels (1024 res, no AA , etc). Yes, its good to have
a fast cpu, as that will get your FPS from say 100 fps to 150 fps at
most.
BUT THINK ABOUT THIS!!!
If you have a geforce 7800 gtx, which is fast enough to play almost
any game currently out at 1600 x 1200 res with 4x AA and other
things turned up....YOU WILL BE GPU LIMITED, NOT CPU LIMITED (unless
you play crappy games like Half-Life-2 which are CPU limited) !!!
GET IT RIGTH!.
At thost high settings, even an amd athlon 64 3000+ is as fast as
the fastest $1000 processor on sale.
So you got a got a geforce 7800 and you plan on playing at very high
quality? You dont need more than an Athlon 64 3000+
GET YOUR CONCLUSION RIGHT....

nice pioneer...but don't see other stuffs like:
- Quality video output and input
- 3DMark05
- X2 core
- Intel Comparison (dual core or upper)
- Need to see performance of 7800GT >< 7800 GTX
- Pls more tests on bigger resolution as: 1600x1200 with all candy
eyes turn on (8AA,16AF). We will go to popular LCD 20-21" this
year as me.
- Where is Chipset comparison?
I have X850XT -> agree it sucks in drivers so long time because
of implanting Macro protection and spywares in its (specially in
Catalyst v5.8). If they get rig of it, it will run perfectly.
Besides, they don't function ZOOM tweak as Nvidia like, that's why
it's not comfortable when surfing website with tiny words on
1600x1200 LCD Screens. Quality Video output, sure ATI wins compared
to Nvidia (6800GT)
AMD 64 3200 cannot outperform Intel 3.2E HT in most cases. I have
both of them. Although AMD 64 3200 on ATI mainboard chipset
(Crossfire) and Intel on 875 chipset. Don't know why people like to
show wrong index?!!! Games, Offices, Graphics...Stability and
sometime it runs faster always on Intel. Up to now, I want to
upgrade my system, but really wonder go to Intel route or AMD X2
route...Doubt it? If you have both, pls tell me where to go now.
Thanks anyways

Agreed, re: 1600x1200 performance. Since 16x12 is playable on
almost all of these games with the 7800GTX, and performance is
almost identical regardless of processor speed at this res, why
would the 3500+ be the "sweet spot"? 3000+ looks good
enough for me, and in fact that's what I have planned for my next
build--3000+ and 7800GTX.

I sadly haven't been able to experience that "Wow, this card is
awesome" or the joy of running a DX9 application at 1280x1024
at an applicable framerate, But from what I HAVE experienced is,
that when it comes to NVidia, Intel always worked for me. As i speak
my card runs fine with my 3.0 GHz P4. Nvidia cards have always
favored Intel in my machine, even back to the TNT2 days. Good
article, my 5 cents.

It is interesting to note though, that the performance of the cards
at the 1600 x 1200 resolutions were all similar, no matter what
processor was used. Obviously, at lower resolutions you could see
the 7800 GTX was being bottlenecked by the CPU, however, at the 1600
x 1200 resolution there was no bottleneck. Therefore, can't you
logically conclude that if you play your games at max quality and
max resolution, the processor you use won't really matter as much as
it would at lower resolutions?

only that the average gamer probably know even less about cars or
physics than they do about computers, so that Ferrari analogy was
moot in the first place.

im sure that and similar posts by this fellow are just attempts at
trying to make the canadians and others flame the japanese and other
asians. not really working, and judging from this guy's past posts
on similar threads, i'd say it has never worked.

you know for someone who hates canadians you sure like to use
canadian slang a lot. were you an_ally violated while in canada or
something? oh and yes, as someone else pointed out, ATI was also
founded by a stanford graduate of asian origins. just like nvidia.
so i guess this makes you the hoser.
