Nice article. But I wonder if an Athlon 64 x2 3800+ is compatible
with that MSI board? I would prefer to spend a little extra on a
dual core system. If anyone has that setup please post... thanks!

The Bwnq DW1640 is a much better drive.
The NEC 3540A is also better than the included 3520A.
Why were these not considered when they are for practically the same
price?

I think this is more of an upgrade guide than a complete gaming
system guide.

Is it possible to just get a 2800+ or 3000+ and overclock it? Of
course, you'd also need a decent cooler then, so I am not sure it
really saves anything.

Totaly agree, there is nothing in this that we didnt already know.
I know that the 7800GT is better than my TNT2 thanks, but is the
Logitech MXxxx gaming mouse really worth the extra money over the
Saitek gaming mouse if Im building a cheap gaming PC or should I
save my cash and just get a no-brand optical mouse and put the money
towards more RAM? Thats the kind of stuff we want to know. A 7800GT
is great but when its connected to my 5 year old 15" CRT
monitor which can only just do 1024x768 is it really worth a 1/4 of
your system price? They should have lowered the system spec a little
and added monitors, mice etc. To show what you can get for a grand.
Talking of spec what about an Intel 945 board with a Pentum D 820?
Thats got to be about the same sort of cost?

My thoughts exactly. I'm actually in the market for another PC,
with a serious budget, and I plan to still use my current PC, not
replace it. Plus, shipping and tax represent very real costs, so
leaving those out defeats the purpose of the guide.

The reviewer shouldn't be surprised that this machine performed
well. The 7800 GT and 3500+ aren't "mid range" parts,
they're high end parts, and anything above them is purely bragging
rights.
Those prices are very optimistic, and they forgot tax and shipping.
They also forgot an OS, which if done legit is about $100 for a full
version of XP home. That makes it closer to $1500 which is a more
honest price for a good gaming box.
I'm glad they did this. Too many people think that the latest and
greatest are the only thing worth mentioning, but even this
"value" model shames what most people actually have.
Things like RAID, SLI, and dual core chips add so little to your
performance compared you pay for it, that its not worth it.

sharkyextreme makes a better $1000 system guide, since it is more
comprehensive by including everything needed to make a working
system. this fs guide assumes you have some basic things such as
kb,mouse, speakers, monitor etc. which can easily add up to a couple
hundred more. thats is why imo this system represents more of a
$1500 system than a $1000 one
