| | (Post a comment) » Quake 4 CPU Shootout: Intel vs. AMDWondering which processor delivers the best bang for the buck in Quake 4? What about the right memory size, 1GB or 2GB? In our Quake 4 CPU Shootout we'll address both of those questions, as well as add a little SLI to the mix. Once again Chris has gathered 20 CPUs for this article. Very good comparison & article but one small flaw: The OS was
32-bit. I don't know how much difference it would have made if
64-bit Windows was used instead. For Doom on Linux, there is a
significant difference between 32-bit and 64-bit OSes on 64-bit CPUs
but I would not extrapolate that difference to Windows.

I have seen the difference in BF2 with 1GB and 2GB RAM. This is a
different path but the I recently went to 2GB and the BEST THING is
that I can have more apps open when I start Quake4 and get EXCELLENT
performance (the game dumps IMMEDIATELY back to the desktop using 1+
GB in Task Mgr). Of course the X2 4400+ doesn't hurt but I think
that is the best reason to have 2GB, I have yet to hear my swap
file

And how did you test? Timedemo or NetTimedemo? What demo was used?
What kind of scenes was shown in the demo? And WHY didn't you say
anything about any of this?

One point has obviously been gone unnoticed: The RAM. I don't mean
the raw mass of it, but its speed.
In that insanely high res of 1600x1200, you still see a clear
difference between the FXs and the Pentiums, and thats not because
of the better core architecture. The FXs have a Core freq difference
of 600MHz, so the FX57 should be better than the FX51, if it was for
the better core architecture. It's because of the better memory
access which is the same among all those FXs, low latency
DualChannel DDR400, usable close to the theoretical limit of 6,4GB
thanks to the integrated mem controller.
You can also see a clear difference between the two Pentium EE, the
one with only 60Mhz more yields a greater difference than the FXs
among each other. The reason can only be the 1066MHz FSB instead of
the 800Mhz in the 3,40GHz one - so more usable memory bandwidth
(still relatively high latency compared to the AMD platforms).
So, the suggestion to the gamer should be: Try to crank up you
memory speed as high as possible, two bars of DDR500 instead of
DDR400 coupled with a meager (non-overclocked) 3000+ can be better
than having a higher clocked core with slow RAM.
Same goes for Pentium platforms, a higher FSB and good RAM will
certainly help (though you will also overclock the CPU itself along,
so buy a slower core for the smaller multiplier to have higher RAM
freqs at, say 4GHz CPU freq).
That seems to be true even, or especially in a high (i.e. grafics
card limited) resolution.

What is the point of even having an Amd versus Intel shootout for
game performance. Intel hasn't beaten AMD in any game this
millenia, and may never again so what is the point of even doing an
article with an obvious answer. If somebody is too stupid to know
that AMD owns intel in anything gaming related, I doubt they would
be capable of even reading the article.
