| | (Post a comment) » ATI Radeon X1900 CrossFire Performance PreviewEarlier this week we took a look at the performance of ATI's new flagship Radeon X1900 XTX and X1900 XT graphics cards, today we're here to evaluate the performance of the third piece of the puzzle, ATI's Radeon X1900 CrossFire solution. With 96 pixel shaders and 1GB of combined RAM in an X1900 CrossFire system, you can imagine that it's quite a performer. But how does it compare to the X1800 CrossFire, as well as NVIDIA's mighty GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB SLI? What about 8x and 14xAA performance? Find out in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

That was probably the most !@%$!&&$ comment I've ever read.
First of, what did nvidia create excactly? second, ATI's RD580
chipset had dual 16X PCIX configuration and as far as I know it's
due to be released in the next month or two (not sure exactly when),
and from the review of it I've read it's just as good as the NVIDIA
chipset.
I don't question the fact that SLI has the upper edge now, but
didn't it also have lots of issues at release like crossfire?
Usually a new platform has it's problems and bugs and it takes time
to fix them.
But to be honest, who really cares whether you use an exterior
dongle or internal connection? The second you finish putting the
machine toghether you'll rarely look at the back of it anymore.
And I am not quite the ATI fanboy just because I would like to see a
fair comparison between the best cards from each company on a
similar platform. I personaly own a X800XT PE at the moment but
before that I had 2 seperate NVIDIA cards which I also liked very
much.

The ATI cards can't run dual 16x pcie. That is something only
available for Nvidia cards because they created it. There is no
sense of them handicapping the Nvidia card of waiting a couple of
years for ATI to catch up when Nvidia on dual card setups just
because some ATI fanboy thinks it's unfair. It's Nvidia's best
against ATI's best. Handicapping either system is unfair. If
anything it is unfair even using ATI's numbers for crossfire because
pass through cables suck and no one in the right mind would actually
build a crossfire rig, where lots of people actually have SLI rigs.

Isn't testing the 1900XTX CROSSFIRE in dual 8X PCIX mode also
holding back the cards?
I saw a preview in anandtech.com of the RD580 chipset refrence board
and the results were quite a bit faster in crossfire, although they
were asked by ATI to not publish the exact benchmarks as it is only
a refrence board and not the final product.
I belive that in benchmarking the playing field should be level and
not giving one platform a substantial edge over the other.
You might claim that you should test the best of one offering versus
the best of the competition, but I ask, how is that fair?
Isn't testing SLI with twice the PCIX lanes as CROSSFIRE unfair?
If you think it's fair, then just say so, because I only noticed
that the SLI board was dual 16X PCIX becuase I read that motherboard
review some time ago.

But why would they want to hold back the performance of a card for
benchmarking, that is called unfair.

I would just like to point out and ask, why in hell are you
comparing SLI in dual 16X PCIX configuration to CROSSFIRE in dual 8X
PCIX configuration? It seems to me to be a rather bad oversight if
you didn't notice that, which I hope you did as I read reviews in
this site quite often...
If I am mistaken and you can manually set the A8N32-SLI Deluxe
motherboard to dual 8X PCIX configuration then please correct me.
This is my first comment in this site, and I would just like to say
that I think your reviews are great and really helpful, even to us
computer freaks in Israel :)

You're insane. I too was a big 3dfx fan and kept my V5500 as long
as possible, but I ditched it about 5 years ago. What are you
playing on that thing Quake 2.

I'm still using a v5500. I hate Ati and Nvidia. I'll upgrade when
there is an alternative on the market.

ATI still neglects Linux to it's discredit so I would rather go with
a slower Nvidia card for this specific benefit. A few FPS more to be
a complete slave to Windows is no bargain especially with Nvidia's
cleaner SLI implementation. Thus, I'll be switching (upgrading) to
Nvidia in February.
