(Post a comment) » Building a $400 per component Super PCIt's that time of the year again – another system building article. We can't really build a killer system for $400, but our gimmick this time is setting a $400 limit per component. That way, even if you've only got $400 to upgrade your existing PC, you can get a sense of what options are out there. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Now that AMD is cutting prices on the Opteron 2XX series whit up to
54,2%, wouldnt that be a better choice?

While one set of the Corsair memory mentioned in this article is
fine, don't think that you can buy two. A four gigabyte setup with
4 of the DIMMs mentioned in this article (4 x 1GB) will not post
with this motherboard. I tried several suggestions of relaxing the
timings and upping the voltage rates from www.asktheramguy.com and
nothing has worked. I'll be senting on of the sets back.

The SilverStone Nitrogon NT02 heatsink/fan is hard to find, but if
anyone is seeking one, the best price with shipping that I found was
from Micro Center.
As for all the people who keep preaching about how they are going to
buy consoles, that's fine if all you do is play computer games.
However, FiringSquad is for more than just gamers, and some of us
use our PCs for more than just games (i.e., work, hobbies such as
photography, videography, music, etc., design, and others). Please
keep in mind that everytime you preach about how it's cheaper to go
buy a next-gen console for your games, that some of us use our PCs
for something other than simply computer gaming.

It's not about looks or the sheer number of fans. It's about design
and airflow. The SilverStone TJ-07 doesn't look that cool because
it's an unibody design.
The best chassis of all time is the Silicon Graphics Octane. I
don't mean this because of looks, but because of thermal management.
That is a system where you can have a 850W power supply (remember
required PSU power -> heat production), and 3 10,000 rpm SCSI
drives in a mid-tower size chassis with unbeatable stability.

Why would you not buy the Cooler Master Stacker 830 which is
heads/tails above that crappy looking SilverStone Temjin TJ-07.
It's better looking, far superior cooling ability, has the advantage
of ATX and BTX and looks a lot sharper IMO.

Maybe you should learn how to form a sentance and base it on
something. Your post makes zero sense.

Why spend extra $ on silent components only to use loud and unproven
CPU cooling, a loud PSU and then place it all in a case with 6
fans!?!
That’s 8 fans spinning in that system which makes it far from silent
and also negates the money spent on more expensive
"silent" products.
It just doesn’t make sense. But then again it seems sense was not an
issue here but pimping products from Silverstone to give them value
for whatever they gave you was.
This article is a real low point here at FS. Are you guys quitting
and are trying to make a buck before you leave? Cause this sort of
things will loose all your credibility very fast.

I kinda found this article pointless. Other than the monitor,
videocard, and CPU... all those components will be top of the line
for the most part. Unfortunately, those top-of the line components
will make the least amount of difference to the performance of the
PC. Better to be reasonable on those parts and focus on what
counts.
