| | (Post a comment) » NVIDIA's Quad SLI: Demystifying the rumorsOne of the most talked about new technologies that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show last month was NVIDIA's Quad SLI technology showcased in the Dell XPS 600 Renegade PC. Unfortunately, one downside from the announcement was that more questions were asked than answered. In today's article we go over the technology behind it as well as answer some of the more common questions -- when will Quad SLI make its debut on the PC, and most importantly to the DIY market, when will cards hit retail? All those questions and more are answered. We've also conducted a Q&A session with Dell complete gameplay video footage of the system up and running F.E.A.R. in full 2560x1600 glory on a Dell 3007WFP monitor. Check it all out inside! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

This is #!#%@%@@. A single 7800 GTX can run any game at the max so
why do I need four? The only thing I can think of is a big e-penis
in 3dmark06.

Don't get caught up in quad 7800's. They just used that GPU as a
proof of concept. Same thing can be said for any and all current
SLI/CF setups. And clearly this is not for you if you are only
going to be gaming on a 19" CRT.

On my NEC MultiSync 97f I don't notice any difference past
1280x1024. At that resolution I can see a bit of difference with and
without AA but any level of FSAA at that resolution is unoticable to
me. Yeah it makes a difference at 1024x768 but at 1280x1024 on my
19" CRT FSAA dosn't make a difference to me. Four 7800 GPU's is
really just a waste of money to me, especially when in 12-18 months
there will be one card that will outpreform that 4 card setup, but
then this is a country where people drive hummers just to get the
groceries and pick up the kids.
Sure I think it's insane to spend almost a months pay for quad
GPU's, especially since by the time you need to upgrade from a 7800
GT there will be a single GPU out that will provide the performance
of that Quad core setup. If you can waste the money now fine go for
it, spend that money and keep the economy going. If you can only
afford one to two 7800's don't have a panic attack. Unless ATI and
NVidia slow down in a few months there will be an even faster card
that you can waste your money on.

I stand by my LCD. It requires more frequent upgrades to keep it
running at good FPS at native res, but you can't put a price on your
eyes.
And as long as devs keep the lowest common denominator in mind (ie.
average gamer), they can string as many cards together as they want
with SLI. Progress be damned, I'm too cheap to buy all these cards.

"In case you’ve been living under a cave the past month"
I think the expression you're struggling for is, "living under
a rock" or maybe, "living in a cave".

i think teh biggest benefit to the average gaming community is the
extra power of sli for game devs.
imagine trying to program fear on a ti4400. now imagine programming
fear on quad ti4400 adn then quad 9700 then quad 6800 see. i would
think all that graphics horsepower has got to make things alot
easier one devs who are always shooting far into the future.

Resolution is configured per game a$$hat. If your system can't
support a decent FPS at 1600x1200 you can drop it to 1280x1024?
What's hard to understand?
